GM : Ally Bain
Strange to see how long this game lasted & I'm not writing about seasons but months that the game has been played.
Well done Nick, Ian & John but also to those that played the game 'until the fat lady whistles' (as you should know, one of my favourite
phrases). BTW to Craid & John, I've written a few lines after your own EGS.
You may remember that I keep stats & the Openings & Engings of this game have been icluded to the follwoing link will take you to the
intro page of the stats; www.alb-gsb.com/diplomacy/stats/stats.htm
See you on the boards, Ally
FRANCE : Ian Pringle
One way or the other, this is a game I never got into fully. The principal reason was that work became very hectic so I didn't diplome as
much as I should have in the early stages.
I remember 3 of us NMRing in Autumn 1901 and I can't remember why I did because I try to ensure I get moves in and the early stages
are so important.
I had to make a fairly quick decision whether to ally with England or Germany and chose England. But I don't think that Nick and I ever
really hit a solid alliance where we trusted one another. The ENG and regions around were always a bit vulnerable and tempting.
Thanks anyway, Nick; I'm glad we shared in the draw.
Craig as Italy hung around in the game and it is good that he survived; the same for Ben, as Turkey.
I suppose my eventual ally would have been John as Russia and France could have carved up everything else. But it seemed the thing
to do to go with the draw.
Shame about the Austria anarchy - he dropped out of everything at the same time.
Thanks to you, Ally, for great GMing,as always. I just don't feel that the game ever got going fully and we didn't do your time and effort
justice.
Look forward to meeting you all in the future.
Ian
ITALY : Craig Beal
Given the historic track record of Italy, I decided to make the ultimate gamble. The gambler lost in Spring 2001 as Austria took Venice! I
never recovered but I did survive. On a side note, I would not recommend playing this game with Klaas Sloots again. After stabbing me,
he quit the game and went into anarchy.
Craig Beal
Craig, Klaas was Grey-Listed & in short, very unlikely to be able to play on this site & of course my own, ALB & GSB. Ally
RUSSIA : John Doyle
First of all, I would sincerely like to thank all the players for a well played game. It was a lot of fun, very interesting all the way through,
and I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Thanks guys! Ally, always at your best, I truly appreciate all the work you put into the hobby sir! I would
also like to dedicate this game to the memory of our good friend Tom Tweedy who passed away this past Christmas, he made many
decisions which allowed me to participate on the site despite my blindness, thanks Tom, and my deepest condolences go to his wife,
and relatives.
Spring 1901
Pretty standard opening, but I didn't really talk to anyone. My plans were to try to knock out Turkey from the get go, or to at least put
pressure on him all the way through. This was my first time ever playing Russia, so my tactics in the north were a little weak!
Fall 1901
The NMRs from the western powers saved my bacon right away! I got two builds that were a little unexpected, Swe and Nwy. Ben was
solid, but I wanted to continue applying pressure on him. Klaas was going to be trouble, so I needed to try to talk to him, I finally ended
up talking a lot to Craig in Italy, and well it worked out in the end!
Spring 1902
Ben's Turkish moves were annoying at best! I had to move more support to my south, but at least the battle in the north was going
alright! Reg with Germany didn't really answer anything interesting that could help right away, but at least he was a buffer versus both
England, and France.
Fall 1902
My only goal here was to hold what I had acquired. I was hoping to hold off Turkey as long as I could, and then when, and if he ever
decided to pull back, to stab him as soon as I could to get into BLA. Well, I held him off! Klaas was getting annoying with his attacks into
Gal, so I had to move everything south! Thank goodness that England was occupied with Germany, this also helped me considerably.
Spring 1903
The only goal here once again was to play as defensive as I could to hold off both Austria, and Turkey. Well it worked! Status quo in the
north, and I wondered what had happened to Germany!
Fall 1903
This was a crucial season for me. I was able once again to hold off Turkey, and with the NMR by Austria, I could feel some softening
from Ben. My plan was the same, stay defensive, and wait for a chance to spring on my enemies' mistakes!
Spring 1904
My negotiations with Italy finally started to pay off! We got Austria out of Gal, while taking back Rum. Negotiations with Turkey finally
paid off too, he pulled back his army out of Arm, and pulled out of BLA, how wonderful, just the break I needed, now to stick to my battle
plan, the pressure was easing!!!
Fall 1904
The acquisition of both Bud and Rum were so important to me, and I was successful! The north is still a stalemate, but I have strong
beliefs that both France and England are allies. Poor Germany, there isn't much that I can do to help. My next goal is to move on Turkey
now that Austria has withdrawn from the game, this is indeed good fortune!
Spring 1905
I finally got my fleet into BLA! This was a good and hard fought goal, but it is now done. My plan now is to hold Austria's positions while
trying to manoeuvre myself into an advantageous position while helping out my Italian ally. In the north, I still don't know the game that
well, but I am learning, and England isn't able to put too much pressure on me, maybe he and France are having differing viewpoints!
Fall 1905
I was sorry to see Reg fall here, this will put more pressure on me, but maybe the differences between France and England will start to
show. My moves into Turkey were brutal, but they were a long time in the waiting, making Ben lose two centers was crucial to me
staying as a power in this game. He fought well, and will most likely still show a lot of resistance, he is a very skilled player. Now to hold
the remaining Austrian centers while holding off the French advancement, Italy and I are basically doing joint moves now, it is great!
Spring 1906
Trying to get a hold of the remaining Balkan centers, but to no avail. Still in heavy talks with Italy, and Turkey is still fighting hard to
survive. I can see the French advancement, but England is leaving himself open to a stab from his ally while diverting his forces
northward to fight me off, so I need to keep holding him off, I need to learn this northern map better!
Fall 1906
I made a small mistake in the north, but I was able to at least hold a good position in my fleet retreat into HEL. I always put in a pile of
retreat orders, just in case.. I know that I am cautious, but that's life right! Turkey and I are still battling hard, the game is not over by far.
France is moving eastward, but I am banking on him moving north soon to slow, or to stop England!
Spring 1907
I send in my first End Game Statement, let's see what happens! Italy has now proxied his turn to me, how exciting, this is my first time
doing this! Wow, what power!!! I will move on Vie, and taking it will at least help me slow France's advance. Turkey got in behind me,
but I will be able to push him back in time, not too worried about that army, at least now things are open in his homeland.
Fall 1907
The war is over, and I get a draw!!! Not too bad for my first time with Russia. I am so glad that my EGP was accepted. I would like to
thank Ally for his excellent GM skills as always, this is at least my second game with him, possibly even my third. I would also like to
thank both Ian, and Nick for a well deserved draw, they are both extremely skilled players, I have played with Ian before, he is always
scary to play against. Thanks Craig for your alliance all the way through, it was a blast, and finally, thanks Ben for a game well fought,
you are also an awesome opponent, and I do hope to see you on the boards again soon. In closing, once again, thanks so much for
Tom for everything he had done to allow me to take part in this hobby, it was a good friend of mine, Nick parish who introduced me to
the sight, and to tom back in 2000, nick was an exchange student over here in Montreal at McGill university, he is the one who wrote
out the map for me that can be found on the sight. Thanks all for a thoroughly enjoyable game. Keep well all of you, and "see" you all on
the boards soon!
John Doyle
John, as you know I went to Tom funeral & I wrote in the book of condolences that those I've met, thanks to Dip2000, have helped me
be able to re-learn writing & possibly speach as well. Perhaps without those around Dip2000, my language skills wouldn't have improved
& to those that wonder, my job is multi-drop driving so writing is very brief. In short, I'll never forget what Dip2000 has done for me. To
those not aware of what happened to me, the following is a link to my auto-biog; www.alb-gsb.com/author/authors.htm. One other thing
though that I do wish to add is yourself, John. I do get pis*ed off with people who complain about stupid things as one of the reasons
are people, such as yourself, who know they have a few problems but simply thinks that's one of those things & get on with life & you're
one of them & I admire you. Ally
TURKEY : Ben Drake
Well what a crazy carry-on that was! All started fairly sensibly with me trying to make common cause with the Austrians to carve up the
Balkans and go for the Bear. Unfortunately for us, Czar John proved too wily a foe, and we ground to a halt through 1902-3. So in 1904
the duplicitous Sultan chose to switch sides and try a stab at Austria. Poetic justice punished us though, as not only did our strike into
Serbia fail, but the pesky Italians infiltrated a fleet off our coast which pretty much messed up our plans from then on. So in 1905 we
finally made it to Belgrade, only for Italian marines to land in Sofia and cut us off. From there on in we never recovered, frantically
scrambling around trying to deal with nomadic Italians renegades while also holding off understandably opportunistic Greater Powers...
Ah well. The draw seems a fair end, congratulations to England, France and Russia. Hard luck to the rest, and a special grrr! to the
Italians for confounding us! Thanks to all for the game and especially to Ally for, as ever, efficient and fair GMing.
Sultan Ben,
