GM : Andy Scott
Well Boomer was not your standard game by any means, two anarchies (One of which was accidental but goes to prove you should
never assume in this game!) and A long term proxy by the supposedly strongest player of France to England and a short term proxy from
Germany to Russia that saw Germany destroyed!
All in all I think a four way result was probably the fairest result given the confused nature of the game, one thing I will say to all the
players is the impression I got from comments and what e-mails I saw was that the trick in this game was spotting a truth as it went by. In
most games people are mainly truthful and are trying to hide the lie, this seemed to be the opposite. However that may have just been my
fals impression :-))
Well done to all who survived, I shall look forward to meeting you again at dip2000.
Regards,
Andy
ENGLAND : gary cash-harvey
Firstly, may I thank Andy Scott for advocating the game.
This was my first game for over 25 years, taking it as a whole, it was mostly enjoyable, I say that as the only player who did not NMR.
When I drew England I knew that without France or Germany as an ally i was in a bad position. to leave this game with 1.25 Eagle
points is a real victory for me.
France: what a great ally, I was really sorry when Joe had to withdraw due to personal reasons, but was glad when he gave me proxy,
that made my job a lot easier, Hope to play with you again in the future, you're a rare commodity you have honour.
Once I knew I couldn't get a solo all I had to do was play Turkey for a fool and get him to agree the draw, thanks Chris.
Turkey:. The early NMR threw me, but I knew I couldn't work with Chris, he's a good adversary as he is hard to second guess but I
dont think we ever really got off on a good footing and I just didn't like him, so out of all the players I'm glad he lost the most and settle for
1.25 eagle points.
Russia: After a very good start and getting me and Germany to tie each other up in the North, he NMR'd, and failed to retreat his fleet in
Sweden that killed you as a major power, I think Edmund and I finally managed to trust each other resulting in a very unlikely 1.25 eagle
points for both of us, well done on convincing Turkey to agree, though I wonder if the same result would have occurred had you
rumbled the proxy. look forward to playing against you again.
Germany: I never understood why Stefan built a second fleet, did he really think that England would sit back and continue to work with
him..you where the author of your own doom. A good player and someone I would again enjoy pitting my wits against.
Austria: Very limited comm's with Jose and i think that his going into anarchy was unfortunate as he like most of us thought that he would
be eliminated when his unit was supported, hope the GM'S show you some mercy.
Italy: Your a disgrace, people like you spoil everybodys enjoyment, take a leaf out of Stefans book he fought to the very end, dont
bother coming back under an alias you suck.
RUSSIA : Edmund Davis
First of all, thanks Andy for GMing this game. This was my first game of
diplomacy and I enjoyed it.
I was lucky in the beginning to have both Turkey and Austria requesting my
friendship, and initially planned to ally with Austria to destroy Turkey, with
the aim of having two strong corner positions. However, I found it difficult to
communicate with Austria and after S01 decided instead to attack Austria with
Turkeys help. This change of plan left my southern units poorly placed and left
me with useless pieces for much of the game (in Rum/Sev)
I tried to cause war in the North without ever getting properly involved myself,
I wanted to be free in the South. I felt I largely succeeded in this, although
at the cost of partially alienating both Germany and England.
I was doing ok, gaining momentum by S02, when I went on holiday for four moves,
turning the game over to my brother, who plays a little diplomacy.
Unfortunately after this my attack stalled, and little progress was made in
destroying austria.
When I started playing the game again, an NMR and a stab by Turkey put paid to
my plans to dominate the North and turn on Turkey myself a couple of turns
later. It also caused the final downfall of Germany, apologies! After this I
merely tried to survive and cause a draw.
I felt France did well to get as many SCs as he did, I have to say I was a
little surprised he accepted the draw! I also felt Turkey came back well after
his early NMR.
I enjoyed playing and hope to play against some of you again soon!
TURKEY : Chris Merriman
First off, thanks to everyone for a good game. This was my first online game and my first game that was actually played to a conclusion.
Even before the first season France became my major concern. I knew that he had played on the site before and might be the most
experienced player, and right from the beginning he sent me some patronizingly blatant misinformation that convinced me he had to be
done in quickly. Unfortunately, as Turkey I was virtually powerless in that regard.
So I set my sights on Austria. His correspondence was much more suspicious than Russia’s, and it was pretty obvious that the Ruskies
were up for a serious alliance, which I gladly accepted.
For me, the game was lost early on in S02 when a discrepancy between Andy’s e-mails and the Dip site cause me to miss my orders. I
was furious at the time since it completely ruined my plans, but I probably would have done the same thing if I was GM. Anyhow, that
turn Russia and I were springing our trap on Austria. With my NMR I was unable to get into Greece and Austria was alerted to the fact
that Russia had been lying to him. This cost us at least a couple extra turns in our conquest of Austria. In fact, the only reason I was
able to get into Greece (thereby keeping myself alive) was because of an error Austria made.
So by the time Austria was crushed, France had already gobbled up the remains of Italy’s anarchy. The best I could do from then on in
the south was block France’s advance through the Mediterranean. If it hadn’t been for my NMR I might have been able to put up a
fight for Tunis and Naples, and I’m sure Russia and I could have gotten into Venice. Maybe this would have been enough to keep
France from becoming the dominant power.
Being blocked in Italy, my only option for expansion was to backstab Russia. At this point I was still hoping that Germany and England
would stop France’s northward expansion. When it became obvious that wasn’t going to happen I knew the game was over. I
recognize that my stab on Russia may have helped France, but considering the fact that he NMR’d that turn anyway I didn’t feel too
bad about it. If I was going to lose at least I could lose with a little dignity.
Honestly I think France could have won the game, or at least brought it to a France/England draw. I was way too weak in the north to
even have a hope of holding my flank in Livonia/St. Petersburg. I would have crumbled like a cheap pack of cards and the victors
could divide up my remains any way they saw fit. But I understand that the game had been going for a while and I’m glad that it ended.
On to bigger and better things. Again, good game everyone
