ENGLAND (Geoff Kemp)

I enjoyed this game immensely although got extremely frustrated with it from time to time. I had not come across any of the players except for Mike (Russia) previously so initially tested the water. Had good vibes from both France (Derry) and Germany (Davy) which left a dilemma, who to work with? Also got on as usual with Mike ( Russia ) so would have liked to work with him. Tom (turkey) was friewndly, but distant which is expected at this stage. David ( Austria ) and Tassos ( Italy ) didnt seeem inclined to talk, or if they did, it was very briefly!! So went for the standard English Fence sitting to see which of F/G would do what first. Unfortunately, apart from Bel, both were inclined to be friendly. In the south , Russia was crumbling fast and although the idea of bolstering him from the north appealed, it wasnt to my allies interests and to have any chance of parity with them i had to help finish him off. Mike, I am sorry and hope to play against you again where they is more scope!

Fairly soon it was obvious that Turkey/ Austria were an item, Italy preferred Gunboat and both my allies were talking about working with me to elimainate the other. ( I assume they were discussing eliminating me between them as well!). From my point of view, Derry had proved marginally the more responsible and so we hit Germany and were slowly crushing him against the T/A hordes! Then, to everyones suprise, Tom stabbed Austria, and did such a beautiful job of it that the solo was a distinct possibility.

The obvious thing was to try and put together a stalemate line and so with this in mind i spoke to both Derry and Davy urging them to forget the past and stop Turkey. After some deliberation they both agreed and we spoke to Austria and tried to set it up. Suprise suprise it worked and we were able to keep Austria in for a while. Unfortunately real life kept intruding, Davy, I believe was trying to write his thesis and Derry was just struggling with time. First Davy nmr'd and then as I was struggling to cover his position, Derry did the same.

I had been in conversation with tom from the start and always exchamged plesant comments and by now Tom was working on me to change sides and go for the draw. However, i was not convinced because i thought that he would pick up enough for the win if I did, plus i felt some responsibility for trying to keep both davy and Derry alive.

As it was Derry went into anarchy, and with Davy struggling to get orders in i suspected that Tom was going to get the win. I had discussed with tom about certain centres and to his credit Tom was keeping his word and pulling back. I was sorely tempted but had not committed when to my suprise the two way draw was agreed. For which i am very grateful. I dont know what the final set of moves were that we didnt see but would love to see them ( any chance ally?).

I suspect that if Tom had waited possibly another game year he would have seen that the western allies were in disarray, especially in the south and he could have got the win. As it is i am glad he didnt! And am very happy to share the draw with him.

Austria (David): You were takem out by a master and there was eventually nothing we could do to keep you in,sorry. Was worried about your commitment at the start but when the chips were down you fought on like a good 'un! hard luck and well played.

France (Derry) What happened? You dissappeared when we needed you. Would be happy to play you again, a good ally and regular correspondant.

Germany (Davy) A good player, when we (E/F) stabbed you and then found Turkey running away, you could have given Tom the win. Full marks for reuniting with your ex-allies to try and stop the turkish win. Again, look forward to playing with you again.

Italy (Massos) Well done for staying in the game as long as you did, but you might find it helps to talk to the other players sometimes!

Russia (Mike) What can i say, I am sorry for having to finish you off, perhaps when we are both in a better position in another game, and might even work together. A friendly correspondant and nice guy!!

Turkey (Tom ) Congratulations. Very well played and you deserved the win. Again a regular correspondant and enjoyable with it! Look forward to crossing swords again.

Ally (GM) What can i say, excellent Gming, immune to bribery! lol, and always willing to help and advise where allowable. Thank you for a great game and again thanks to the other players as well.

Take care

TURKEY (Tom Benton)

The way this game worked out bore no relation to the plans I had going in. My initial ploy was to attempt an alliance with Russia. I suggested an agreed bounce in the Black Sea, he said he was willing to leave the Black Sea open, I didn’t believe him and I was at war with Russia by the end of the first turn. From that position I had no option but the alliance with Austria who was very friendly and communicative. I would have quite liked to have kept the alliance going but we hit the barrier of St Petersburg and he left himself SO open. I put in the stab and raced towards a solo victory. Austria crumbled more quickly than I though possible and Italy fell apart under pressure from Austria and France.

I think I may have made some agreements with France about dividing up Italy but it was soon clear that it was everyone against me so I had to grab what I could. In the end the stalemate line was set up so well that not even anarchy from France left a gap in it. Although I needed just another couple of lousy centres, my charge across Europe was at an end and so I was left looking for opportunities for a two-way draw. England seemed to be running the show on the other side so I began negotiations with Geoff. Not a bad result really.

Thanks everyone. That was fun.

GM (Ally Bain)

Only two EGS! That isn't good however thanks to Geoff & Tom for doing yours.

As mentioned before I not only write articles about Diplomacy but also stats. The Openings & Endings of this game are shown & you can see the stats I do by using http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/alb_gsb/diplomacy/stats/stats.htm

I looked at your player status & as only Davy & Tassos were not REGular players I've requested that you're upgraded to that. As you know I grey-listed Derry due to his anarchy & him not telling me what happened.

Either way, I'll see you on the boards.

Ally
