ENGLAND (Cory Larson)

1901- I started the game off with intentions of trying to make peace with at least one of Germany or France, my one concern was a French fleet in the ENG. With this in mind I ordered to ENG with one fleet and positioned for a convoy to Nwy in the fall.

1902- Wow...... Russia is giving me a gift, it is always hard to find that 5th SC as England I jump all over StP. Elsewhere I play guessing games with France, seeing that France is attacking Germany as well I try to initiate an alliance with Germany.

1903- I continue my efforts to get Germany into an alliance and at least for now we seem to have a nonagresion pact. The game of cat and mouse with France now has now resulted in France at least being in his home waters. I try to get Germany to support me into Mos which apparently was not to be. At this point I start look for Germany to stab me.

1904- Yup Germany wants Moscow, I can't let on that I know his/her intentions so I continue on with my attempts to take Mos and the support in the north. My war with France has taken a turn for the better,....... much better I guessed correctly and now sit in position to take one or perhaps both the Iberian SCs.

1905- Peace with Germany will not last I move to NTH in the spring as I fully expect an attack this season. No attack in the spring, Germany is set to take Mos without the need of my support. I send my orders in for the fall with the with the intent of stopping Germany on all fronts, this means helping France (for now).

1906- I jockey my navies into position in the north and try to help stabilize France in the south. Not alot else happens this year.

1907- What did happen this year?

1908- Success we have stopped the German advance and turned the tide, now I must look for my opportunity to attack France.

1909- I have broken through the German lines (thanks to a NMR), the time looks golden to attack France and go for the solo. My decision is only made easier looking at Turkey's position.

1910- I continue to push on Germany in the north and pretty much ignore France this year.

1911- Not a lot happens this year, other than Italy being pesky in the south.

1912- I make the big push this year taking SC 15, 16 and 17 look pretty easy but 18 may be tough, I position myself to try and take Tun.

1913- The Germans go down without much of a fight, the Italians on the other hand are really making me work for the solo. If things keep going like this I don't think it will happen.

1914- "Turkey Gets Greedy" should have been the headline of this year. Thanks to Turkey attacking Italy I am pretty much assured of the solo, at this point I just have to rush Tun.

1915- Turkey continue to push in from the SE but it really means nothing at this point.

1916- Game board speaks for itself.

As for my opponents,

France- My first enemy, you played quite a good game from what I could tell but fighting Germany and I at the same time early really sealed your fate. Sorry about the stab later but you were more my fodder while I positioned myself to take out Germany

Germany- Good start, saw your plans from a mile away and was not surprised at all when you tried to attack me. Your lack of effort after the tide turned was disappointing.

Russia- You defended Moscow valiantly.

Austria- Can't say as you really had any impact on my game.

Italy- Italy Italy Italy, what can I say you were never large which was a good thing as you were the only one in the end that really tried to stop me.

Turkey- Greed cost you a draw on this game, that about all I am going to say on that.

As for our GM - Thank you very much for a excellent game Ally, definitely no complaints from me.

Thanks All

Cory

FRANCE (Nikolay Pavlov)

Looks like Game Over to me, so I can write my EGS now. If by some miracle England does not win, I'll have to revise it. Here it is:

I wanted to start this game as ambiguously as possible, without committing to active confrontation with either Germany or England for as long as possible. So my opening moves, though may have appeared anti-English, were meant to be defensive - bounce in ENG, bounce in IRI. Well, the latter didn't actually play out as a bounce, for England did not attempt to sail into IRI. And obviously, that meant no more sitting on the fence, not that there was any point to it as England and Germany seemed to have come to a mutual understanding.

By that time Germany was in fact, doing very well, much better than I would've liked, and I knew that once he was done in the east he'd almost cert inly go after me, so I thought it was worthwhile to try to slow him down. That's when I poked into Munich in A02. (When I play Gunboat, I usually try to consider every map position on its own, without regard for past seasons; for I firmly believe that, much like in a chess game, it is all about finding the optimal strategy from that moment on. Of course, the past can tell you something about another player's intentions - but those can, and should, change with the board position. Therefore reasons like "don't provoke the German, he might turn against you" didn't really factor into that decision.)

Well, it worked, in a sense - I did slow the German progress in the east, at the cost of attracting his attention in the west. And with the English having captured StP and mobilized a new fleet, things looked pretty grim for me. Then one disastrous turn I forgot to order a retreat for one of my fleets, while the Germans pulled a very nice maneuver through Piedmont and I was toast.

After that, I could only hope that England and Germany would turn on each other before they had quite finished me and I might be able to use that to revive. That did happen. But I had no chance of standing up to England without a navy, plus England was the one I could expect to get some help from, and so I tried to regain some strength at the expense of Germany. Of course, I knew that the time would come when England would have no more use for me and simply finish me - but I didn't expect it so soon - by my calculations, if he was aiming for a solo, it was too early; he needed to establish some presence in the Mediterranean first to prevent the formation of a stalemate line. I see now that I was wrong.

There's nothing more to say about my part in the game. I think that, in the end, Turkey had a better chance for a draw by supporting the Italian fleets rather than eliminating them, though it still seemed they were one army short of what they needed for a stalemate. Congratulations to England; he probably realized much earlier than I did that all the Turkish fleets in the eastern seas wouldn't be much use in the endgame, and seized the opportunity; very well played indeed! To Germany - I apologize for what must've been, from your point of view, a very frustrating France; but I still believe that, most of it at least, was in France's best interest. To everyone - thank you for a very interesting game. And Ally - thank you so much for GM'ing.

Nick.

ITALY (Andy Cochrane)

Very many thanks are due yet again to Ally for managing this game. As if he hasn't got enough on with Admiral III. Oh and life outside the diplomacy circle. Thanks Ally.

Thanks also to the rest of you in the game for making it such a tight one.

As Ally commented this was a contender for the longest number of seasons with all 7 players still in up until A12 by my reckoning. The fact that there were no NMR's for the first 7 years has to have a bearing on that. Also the two German NMR's S9 and S10 had a detrimental effect on the balance thereafter.

That being said I thank all of you for persisting along with me for so long.

Congratulations to England for the solo.I can't say I took too much notice of your gameplan as my own gameplan restricted me to one sphere of influence on the board.....Austria.

I started the game with a view to having a stong Austria/Italy alliance. Austria felt differently.

I am now going to bore you with the Italian mainland which most take no note of until ready to invade it.

The following is the game from the Italian viewpoint. It's very very limited.

S01 Italy supports Austria..............................................Austria attacks Italy

A01 Italy supports Austria.............................................Austria attacks Italy

S02 Italy stands.............................................................Austria supports Italy

A02 Italy stands............................................................Austria supports Italy. We got it

S03 Italy supports Austria.............................................Austria attacks Italy. Ok

A03 Italy supports Austria............................................Austria attacks Italy. I'll try again

S04 Italy supports Austria.............................................Austria stands

A04 Italy supports Austria............................................Austria stands

S05 Italy stands............................................................Austria stands. An understanding?

A05 Italy moves against France....................................Austria stands

S06 Italy supports Austria.............................................Austria attacks Italy. Please say it aint so

A06 Italy defends against Austria..................................Austria stands. Well done

S07 Italy defends against Austria (just in case)..............Austria attacks Italy. I'm giving up

A07 Italy supports Austria (Why?)...............................Austria attacks Italy. I give up

S08 onwards Austria decides I am no longer the major threat to his well being and moves in depleted strength against the Turks and starts to crumble in A10 and is first out in A13.

I started with 3 supply centres.
I had 4 SC's from A01 - A07
I had 3 SC's from A08 - A13
I had 1 SC from A14 - A16
Not much interest is there?

From A12 it was obvious England (15SC's) was the one to stop and all of us were still in. My difficulty was helping to set up a stalemate line with Turkish help. It's never easy to do in gunboat. We nearly had it sewn up but my moving out of Tun in S14 and Turkey bouncing me out in S15 was our undoing. Well part of our undoing.

I have to say thanks though to Turkey for allowing me to at least survive in the last season when it was obvious that England had solo'd. You could have easily taken Nap off me but chose not to, thanks.

All being said this was one of the most enjoyable games to have been part of and I thank once again all of you for making it so.

Thanks Ally

RUSSIA (Trygve Leivestad)

It isn't really much to say about this game, except that I played extremely poorly (Ally, can I stay anonymous???) and survived surprisingly long.

I definitely missed in the opening.

I didn't expect the Austrian move to Rum, and since there was no bump in BLA, I was in a position where I couldn't get any SC in the south, without risking loosing Sev. That in it self wasn't a disaster, but then I decided to be a little too creative, going after Germany instead. I should have understood that I had enough fighting Austria, and that I'd also probably annoyed Turkey a bit, thus I should have 'stayed at home', defending instread of adding Germany to my list of enemies and inviting England into StP.

After making almost all errors possible I was left with one unit in Mos.

It seemed that E & G worked together, so I decided to try to support Turkey, hoping that I might get some support back. Luckily, after a while England decided to attack Germany, and at the same time supported me for a while, granting my survival.

After a while it was pretty obvious that England was winning the battle against Germany, so I decided to try to support Germany since I assumed that if England eliminated Germany I'd be gone pretty soon. I managed to put him into StP, but England immediately retook it. After that I managed to slow down Turkey for a couple of turns by supporting the remaining unit in War, but it was pretty inevitable that in the end I'd be eliminated, but as I said, surprisingly late.

Thanks to Ally for GM'ing. I'm really sorry for the NMR's. Fortunately they never influenced on the outcome, but I should have gotten my orders in anyhow.

Finally, congratulations to England.

Trygve

TURKEY (Andy Longford)

"I am finding it difficult to write an EGS for a Gunboat game, since there is no obvious diploming to write about. I will therefore keep this short and sharp.

Firstly - many congratulations to England. A good game ended with a good win.

Secondly - I need to appologise to Italy. In Spring 1915 I made a BIG miscalculation. I had just taken Rom and Nap and was expexted an Italian backlash. I therefore did not support the Italian TYS fleet into Tun, merely tried to keep an English fleet out. That proved a mistake and in effect sealed the English win. A lesson learned!

Thirdly - A praise for Russia. Despite being reduced to one unit quite early, Russian orders were consistently submitted. that what the game is about.

Lastly - A big big thank you to Ally for running the game."

Cheers

Andy

GM (Ally Bain)

As you know, I do keep the stats & the Opening stroke Endings of this game has been added. Based on that, Cory, England was the worse country until you won this game so you must therefore take great credit for achieving that victory. By equally adding the congrats, Andy more or less wrote it but putting my thoughts into writing, Trygve, by you continually submitting your orders, when for many years you only had one unit, is to me & many others the biggest example of a fantastic player.

To the rest of you, remember also that you’ve been part of a very good game so to you, thanks.
