GAMESTART INFORMATION

GAMESTART INFORMATION
I am Ally Bain & as you know I am your GM for this game. I am neutral & by being so I am able to answer any questions as long as they do not upset my status in the game.

My son & I have five tropical freshwater fish tanks & therefore I have called the game 'Marbled Hatchetfish' as this is a common name for a fish. Marbled Hatchetfish, Carnegiellia strigata as their scientific name, are in the Characins family & are sociable but best kept in schoals. Their natural habitat is in Peru & Guyana & swim just below the surface of fast flowing rivers. Due to their pectoral fins they are happy to jump. You will able to see, in future maps, a picture of the fish.

As you may know, within seven days you must submit provisional orders for this season, ideally ASAP. The reason being that if I do not receive orders from one or more players, the game will be delayed until they have been replaced.

Sadly during games, people often NMR. I would ask that you consider how long games last and if you feel you cannot continue playing for that period of time, I would ask that you to notify me. As an example, I would think the game will last for ten months.

The deadline is 7pm Greenwich Medium Time (BST) however we have Xmas holidays coming soon. The next date will be 8th January 2003.

Regarding me, I live in Chelmsford, Essex, England. Even though I live in England I am a Scot. I am 39 years old and have been happily divorced for many years. I have a 12-year-old son, called Graeme, who lives with his mum but often sees me at weekends. Outside Diplomacy & aquariums, I enjoy football & go to Jive dances.

Regular Diplomacy rules & Diplomacy 2000 houserules:

1. This game will be run to the Diplomacy2000 houserules, found here at: www.lancedal.demon.co.uk/dip2000/diprules/rulesidx.htm. If you have not read them then I suggest you visit the Diplomacy2000 website and do so, and even print them off and keep them handy. The most important rule being that...deception of the GM is not permitted under any circumstances...

2. All players are expected to participate until their role in the game ends - either the game being completed (several months duration), or the player being eliminated. If you do not think you can give that level of commitment then let me know now so that I can arrange for you to be replaced. In the event of any drop-outs (two consecutive misses) after the game has started, the country concerned will be placed in anarchy and all units will stand. The player dropping out will not be replaced, and in addition will almost certainly not be allowed into any other Diplomacy 2000 games.

3. The Spring 1901 (S01) deadline will be 8th January 2003, 7pm (GMT) but I need to hear from you all as soon as possible (within seven days at most or you will be kicked off the game):
(a) confirming your intention to play
(b) supplying me with a set of provisional or FINAL Spring 1901 orders

The game will be run on a '2-season per game year' basis, so conditional retreats/disbands should be sent along with all orders, and conditional builds/disbands should be submitted along with Autumn (Fall) orders. There are no separate seasons for the retreat and build/disband phases. When submitting your orders please ensure they are complete or only the orders you have enclosed with your latest e-mail will be processed. For example, you send me an e-mail saying, "I want to order A(Bul)-Ser and all other orders are as per my previous e-mail of orders", I will order all units to hold unordered except for A(Bul), which will move to Ser. Prevent yourself becoming the object of derision of your fellow players in this way by ensuring you submit complete sets of orders only.

4. I will acknowledge receipt of all orders. If you have not received a confirmation of receipt of your orders within 24 hours I would advise you to resubmit them. I would advise that you send provisional orders to me as soon as possible each season. This is a good habit as PCs and servers have a habit of crashing at the most awkward moments, or illness might strike, or other commitments might cause you to forget the deadline. You can always change your orders as many times as you wish at any time up to the deadline. If you do miss a deadline then do not complain because I certainly will not readjudicate the game. Just ensure you get your orders in for the following season.

5. I will accept orders (or revised orders) at any time up to when I adjudicate. This will normally be within a few hours of the deadline, or if Gunboat, when all finals are in. I do try to make allowances for the different time zones but I will not deliberately delay adjudication if orders are missing.

6. Please ensure all e-mails to me bear the name of the game, the season, and the country you are playing. I cannot always remember just who is playing in which game! It will help my filing system and make life simpler for me. Should your e-mail address change then advise me immediately or you may not receive the next adjudication.

7. Deadlines will normally be ONE WEEK apart, or if Gunboat, when all orders are in. Generally speaking I will not accept requests to extend deadlines for your personal reasons, except in extreme circumstances. Holidays, exams and working away, I do not consider to be extreme circumstances, and it is the responsibility of each player to ensure their orders have reached me on time.

8. Press will be accepted. Press from me will carry the dateline, 'ALB', yourselves from your capital or country followed by 'Govt' incase you have lost your capital. I enjoy press, so please send some, as this adds to the games over-all feel.

9. Shortly after the adjudication I will make a map of the game & this will be shown on the web site for Dip2000. If you have not received the adjudication (or an explanation for any delay) within 24 hours of the deadline, please e-mail me; if this has no response, e-mail the Diplomacy 2000 head honcho, Tom Tweedy, at tom@lancedal.demon.co.uk.

I know this was long winded but I hope you realise why.
