AUSTRIA (John O'Donnell) Austria EGS John O'Donnell
Thanks to Ally for GMing and everyone for a good game with no NMRs.
Intro
This was my first game in gunboat, and I decided to pick A as my first choice. This was principally because of my difficulty playing her in Equinox, and also because I felt my tactical skills (no laughing) needed something of a polish. Well I think this game probably proves that to a certain extent.
Begiining
The hedgehog was a definite after my mauling in Equinox, and I was highly delighted that I played it. The Italian - my eventual nemesis - already was being aggressive. The Russian was also looking at Gal - I was in a sandwich from move one. At this point I became truly paranoid as only someone playing Austria can. The next moves were pretty obvious except I stopped T getting Bul maybe not good play when I probably need an ally. I kept hinting to Germany, but not a sausage - not even saurkraut.
In 1902 I decided to attack everything. I was probably being a pain by putting quick but provisional moves in - but I really was struggling to know what to do. After seeing Italy's play - make a plan and stick to it would seem sensible advice. In the Autumn I made the decisive error - moving the fleet into Alb.
I was determined to move it eventually, but my methodology was flawed. By this time I had helped Russia into Rum, and I should have realised with a Russo-Turkish war that I could have gone for dull but fairly stable AI shoot - out.
Quick middle
Anyway by 1903 it was obvious I was in trouble. Italy did not deviate from his killing Austria plan and I lost Vie.
At this stage I should have tried F[Alb] - ION at some stage - but it probably would only have prolonged the agony.
Sad end
After this I simply got whittled away, although the retreat into the Balkans was a reasonable play. Sneaking Bul at the end was completely jammy. I had hoped that RT would realise that a passive defence could have blocked Italy - but there is no diplomacy in this game!
Well done to the Italian - whoever he/she is.

ENGLAND (Lukas Lundberg) Hi everyone
This was my first game ever, I decided to play gunboat since my English isn't so good (I got help writing this, if you wonder). England was my first choice, but I don't remember why.
It started out pretty well, I wanted an alliance with Germany, and I had one early on. But around 1903-1904 everything broke down, when France got into the English Channel and the North Atlantic Ocean. I managed to keep him out of England and the North Sea for a while, enough to hand this game to Italy. Finally France managed to get into the Irish Sea, then Wales and Liverpool, and by then I was doomed.
Italy decided to attack France, but instead of turning to defend against him, France continued attacking me.
The last two years (1908-1910) was spent moving my army between Liverpool and Edinburgh. But hey - I managed to survive, and I gave France a headache which gave Italy the victory.
Yours, Lukas, King of ScotlandReturn to Top
FRANCE (Mark Porter) Thanks of course for an enjoyable and fast-paced game. This was my first in Gunboat email style.
So, as I didn’t end up victorious, where did I go wrong? I enjoyed the early stages of jockeying for position against England and Germany, while being able to ignore Italy. Slow progress, hopefully becoming dominant in the end. I knew that at some point one of us would have to turn against the other.
When Italy did come my way, having made rather better progress against Austria and Turkey than I had against England and Germany, I was not able to disengage and turn back in time to prevent the loss of Iberia and thus the attack on my rear. To tell the truth, the first move that Italy made against me I chose to ignore and hope that it was a feint. Or something. I knew it was coming really from that moment. I think what I hoped for was to be able to mop up England and Germany quickly enough to be able to mobilise more units to the South. This almost worked – unfortunately for me, by the time I was able to make serious progress I had no open supply centres to be able to actually build those units.
Such is life.
Well, to my worthy foes in England and Germany, special thanks, and to the treacherous Italian… Thanks as to everyone else.
See you around, MarkReturn to Top
GERMANY (Mike Halpin) This game started off very well. I made significant gains towards France at first. But it was difficult for either of us to break through towards the other. I took Belgium, and from that point on, France and I seemed to have an agreement for a while. He began to postion fleets against England and we maintained the status quo in Alsace-Lorraine. With the west locked up and England busy, I swiftly pulled most of my forces around to face the bear. This was also a successful campaign for the most part and I was well-positioned to make some serious gains in Fall 04, despite France moving into Munich.
Unfortuantely, I never recieved the Fall 1903 adjutication. I submitted orders for Fall 1903, as one clearly sees, but when the turn was adjuticated, it never made it to my mailbox. I therefore assumed that Ally was busy and late, as many GMs have been in the past. I failed to also get the spring 1904 adjutication. Finally, I went to the site and found out the bad news, first, France had taken Munich, and second I had NMR'ed allowing France to take even more. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I know that at this point I knew I had no chance of succeeding any longer.
I began to defend against Russia and France, who were squeezing me at the same time. The was not much I could do. Soon, I began to see that Italy was already past the MAO stalemate line for all itnents and purposes, and tried to at least lock him out of central Europe. I proposed the various draws, none of which included Italy, *hint, hint* but Ally decided he would only allow it the first time. Instead of picking up on it, France and Russia decided to continue picking me apart until it was too late. France's comment this last season rally got to me. "I was hoping Germany would take the hint and move to Munich" Where were you in 1908 after the draw proposals!? My moving to Munich would not have changed a thing, and who wasn't taking hints for two years prior to this last turn? Italy had Sevastopol locked up, and so he didn't even need Munich, he just happened to win this year. Thank God, in my opinion. I didn't want to send any more orders in, especially when it didn't make a difference. Who voted against the Italian solo despite its inevitablility?
Great job to Italy, whoever he may be. You were really able to take advantage of the situations you were presented with. Good game to all others, as well. Please do not take any above criticisms personally, it is just the frustration similar to a mute who is choking. Communication is important, and even more difficult in gunboat games, and sometimes it's hard to get on the same page. I look forward to playing with everyone again.
Thanks, Mike H.Return to Top
ITALY (Thomas Gourgolitsas) In the beginning of the game I decided that my enemy should be Austria.
Fall 1901 comes with two armies of mine next to Austria's home SC. It also comes with Russian and Turkish forces around Austria, so I had to take as soon as possible most of SCs from Austria.
In 1902 after seeing France not building a fleet in Mar, I set sail to help Austrian conquer. In 1902 Austria (hopefully) didn't loose any SCs and didn't build any unit. With all my forces facing east I can see it will be easy to eliminate Austria since Russia and Turkey have to fight each other. I didn't build any unit but that's not very bad since all other powers had to give lots of battles against each other. No one paid any attention to me since I had only four units after two years.
In 1903 I get one SC from Austria but best news come from my empty borders from French or German units. I still am no threat to anyone since I only own five SCs. But Austrian elimination is only a matter of time, noticing the map. I always pay attention and do not attack any other than Austria.
In 1904 I got another two SCs from Austria and yet no one wants to attack me. That was what gave me the solo victory I guess.
In 1905 all my forces are moving east and two more SCs come to me from Austria. Still no one wants to establish any fleet in Med. Sea, not even in Aegean Sea! That gives me a great advantage.
In 1906 looking at French border I decided to attack him since I could take an easy SC (Mar). Fall time comes with Austrian elimination and most amazing was that all his SCs (home and neutral) are under my control. My armies in Mar and Ven and my fleets in Med. Sea guarantees a really hard time to France.
In 1907 I realized that victory would come with Turkey's SCs plus three of French ones. Turkey is surrounded by my units and France insists in English elimination, not paying any attention to MAO (VERY strategic province). My army in Tyrolia assures my southern border safety.
In 1908 anyone can see that only if all the rest turn against me, I will loose victory. This is the time I think Germany, England, Turkey think only of their survival than stopping me. Turkey can not manage that (I think a fleet in Black Sea could really slow me). No fleets exist around Black Sea and all I have to do is support effectively Rumania, not loose control of Tyrolia, eliminate Turkey and get one sc from France. All very easy looking at the map.
In 1909 I only sent careful orders, got the last Turkish SC and victory is a matter of one turn ... spring 1910. Europe is mine and in fall all units ordered to hold positions and Italiano is the Europe's official language.
Thank you all for having great time in that game. Most of all our GM, who was both Grand AND Master.
Thank you, TomcutReturn to Top
RUSSIA (Steve Turner) Hard luck to England and Germany and thanks for trying. Sorry Turkey, I was trying to come to your aid but you bounced me out of Armenia. I admit it's difficult to predict peoples moves.
Well done to Italy, but to be fair France made the win for you easier didn't he?
Ally, thanks for the GMing. I'm not sure about some of the press but I doubt it affected the game that much.
France: The idea is to stop somebody winning and not try to get the second most number of units. I've played Gunboat games where mistakes have been made but at least it's been admitted. As soon as Italy came your way you should have thought about defending and not eliminating England and Germany. In a non gunboat game I can understand as these players might have pissed you off with their e-mails and attitude, but not here.
Cheers, SteveReturn to Top
GM (Ally Bain) I have a few comments said in some of your EGS comments.
Mike, I rarely delete my 'Deleted Items' & when you mentioned about you going NMRd, I hunted my 'Deleted Items' togther with 'Send'. They never arrived. I am aware that some servers often do not sent orders as required & Hotmail, AOL & Yahoo are the ones I have faced. As you were all on my 'Group' setting, you were all sent the same e-mail by me 'Bcc' your group. To all, I suggest you keep an eye on the deadline & if you do not hear from any GM, the game on Dip2000 web site.
Steve, you may know, I have decided that all Gunboat games, that I GM, will be 'no press' from players.
Tomcut, just prior to you winning, I checked the stats on Gunboat games. Italy had never won. You are the first on this site. Well done & equally, I am glad to GM a game with a new result, thank you.
To all, As said before, I enjoyed GMing the game. Granted due to the new result but also to you for playing. The game was fun & equally, thank you.
See you on the boards
