ENGLAND (Andy Jamieson)

Rummy preparation

I was excited about this game when it was announced, my first regulars game (and first time playing england) and few old adversaries are involved. I played against Simon in my first game on Dip 2000 and he summed it up nicely with his opening mail to me when he said "they let us play in another game together?" I get the impression Simon is a bit of a rogue and like me prefers the spectacular to the solid, I had high hopes of a late game alliance with Austria. I also noticed Matt was playing, he has played in a game against me and did a good job of thwarting my attempts to steamroller to victory with germany if I remember correctly. A quick look on the dip archive confirmed his pedigree and also pointed to him being a dangerous enemy and a reliable ally. I was very interested in getting off on the right foot with Tobias as unbelievably, he was in another game i was just starting playing Russia to my France. I checked everyone else out and Nick stood out as the other danger, having solo'ed with Italy in his last game though I found it difficult to get a feel for his style from the EGS, my inability to read Nick was a theme that dominated my game in the early years. I decided to play Matt as 2 countries, try and be friendly to him in the north while encouraging all to take him on in the south.

Clearly i didn't want to be the odd one out in the west so I fired off proposals of friendship and warmth to france, germany and russia too, since he is generally in on early english departures. My first instinct was that france/Eng must be good for the same reason russia/turkey is feared but without the downside of a built-in power inbalance and the general paranoia that russia/turkey always brings to the board. On receiving replies from everyone it was clear this was not going to be a game big on conversation, Italy informed me he was going east so it looked like helping france against germany was the best bet.

I should say at this point that this was the extent of my strategic planning, I know strategy is not my strength so I tend to play a tactical game, this oft creates the impression of lurching from one crisis to the next, hey it might not be the best way of playing but it makes things interesting.

early game.

after the spring 1901 ajudication i was surprised at the russia/france alliance, a move later I was extremely nervous, germany was going down faster than the Titanic and it was clear I would be next on the menu. what to do though? there seemed little point in openly supporting germany as this would simply bring them down on me all the sooner. My plan was to maintain relations with france and try to deliver a death blow to russian hopes in the north, I hoped to force france to ally with me so we could sweep east. My plan revolved around a risky convoy to Nwy with the fleet there moving to Swe while the germans moved to den (I persuaded russia to support my army into den to prevent the chance he might bounce the german move), this would allow me to take st pets in autumn and allow me to cut the russian BAL support if necessary and so keep germany afloat. Unfortunately the germans decided to attack BAL without informing me which left my whole plan in tatters and germany a dead duck. This could have been the end of the game for me but luckily things did not go well for Russia in the south so he failed to increase his armies in the north. I made a fateful decision here and abandoned my plans to hurt russia, i wrote to him telling him he needn't worry about St pets and perhaps we could work together when the opportunity arose as it turned out this was teh best move I made all game.

North sea ferry business booming

What followed were 2 years of a game i'd rather forget. i made so many mistakes and misread the intentions of france not once but twice. i could see there was a danger from Nick moving on Lpl but I wrote and explained i would cover the danger so there was no point him trying and this is when logic gets you in trouble in dip as he moved there anyway. Again i wrote explaining that He couldn't possibly get anywhere as I had a fleet and an army in Uk but I would forget his stab and we could work together to destroy russia and Italy. Nick wrote and agreed he couldn't make progress so lets get on and kill russia. Since it was clear he couldn't hurt me , i decided to move my army to Den and work with Nick, though I did tell him if he stabbed me again I would do all in my power to damage him regardless of the cost to myself . Guess what, he attacked me anyway. I was now in real trouble, with my homeland surrounded and holland looking very shaky if russia helped france out. My only out was to call on russia and make a big deal of my staying away from st pets and the obvious franco-italian alliance, all I wanted was him not to support Kie, only a little thing. It worked! i sneaked denmark, got my army back in Uk and suddenly it was all even vs france.

Kiiiiiiill france.

i'm not a bad person but I do thrive on revenge and that was what it was time for. First job was to destroy any vestiges of russian/france alliance and play up the existence of the russian-italian alliance, this was not difficult as Nick was well miffed with Matt. A few e-mails later and we had a complex plan to destroy russia which coincidentally allowed me to disband the french army in Uk and take Bel, as luck would have it the french army ending up in silesia was a huge bonus. Nick was justifiably very unhappy with me and this just made it all the easier to keep pushing him back. Under normal circumstances I think I would have convoyed to nwy and taken kie at this point and worked with france but I had told him i would destroy him and I don't like to disappoint.

So I'm sitting writing this in spring 1905, surveying Rummy and feeling positive for the first time in the game. My prediction is that I will maintain a solid alliance with Russia, make gains in france and then sail into the med. at this point things will depend on how Italy fairs in the south, currently its all square and thats the way i want it to stay. If italy collapses I will have to jump russia and hope for 2-way draw, if she holds out I will sail round to help, make an ineffectual and planned stab of russia and stab Italy hard having organised a 2-way draw with russia, I will then immediately stab russia hard in teh north and hope to grab 18 centres. Of course there area lot of potholes on the way but you have to believe you can win..

1905-1907

Looking back on my bold 1905 prediction, I was rather optimistic. Matt seemed singly unable to second guess jamie's moves and suffered setback after setback. luckily for me Nick anarchied which speeded his demise and allowed me to maintain parity with Jamie. My plan changed slightly to one of mainatining ill will between Matt and Jamie and trying to prop Matt up while encouraging his northern units south so the final stab would be easier. Everything has gone to plan with gains in Iberia and penentration into the Med, however Matt and I seem singly incapable of co'ordinating our units in the centre leading to the disaster in Tyrollia and northern Austria where Italy scored a decisive victory over our combined armies leading to 2 critical disbands. I now have to have a re-think, the game is suddenly fluid again with Pie open and Matts line looking very shaky. I decide to risk all on a daring convoy to tuscany from Spain hopefully allowing an extra fleet into teh med attack and threatening the italian homeland. Now its simply upto how Jamie defends and if Matt can hold out a few more turns. Jamie blocks the convoy and i'm suspicious Matt tipped him off fearing i will stab him if I gain the upper hand vs Italy, it would be nice to know if this was the case as I think this marks the turning point in the game. I think things are even now and plan to suggest a 2 way to Jamie and move into position to force concession from Matt.

spring 1908 a black time for anglo-russian forces.

I'm in positive spirits, feel happy my extra armies will arrive to shore up the centre and though i can't make headway in med jamie can't either. Orders sent early with a 2-way proposal that I hope to be accepted. Write to Matt suggesting some supports but hear nothing back and promptly forget about Rummy and concentrate on another game where i'm fighting for my life. Literally stunned to get adjudication and discover i NMR'd and russia too. I check my mails and discover I sent my orders to Russia rather than Ally. The position is now a shambles, Russia has collapsed, my armies cannot reach the front quickly enough now and there is no way jamie will accept a 2-way draw. Its time to try and defend a stalemate line and give-up the south at least Russia is finally talking. Half of me congratultes Jamie as he's been the best player in this game by some distance, half of me wants him to fall over a Rake and bust his nose.

1909 onwards

Once we had gotten our act together there was no way jamie was going to win outright. The temptation was there to go for it myself now matt had cleared out of germany but it was just not possible without a breakthrough in med which wasn't going to happen. A draw was the right result as Matt played well early in the game.

Final thoughts

Wow I feel like i've lived with Rummy for years now. It really feels like 2 separate games to me in hindsight. The first being a diplomatic battle between myself/russia and france, the second being a tactical war of attrition between myself/russia and Italy. General impression was that I enjoyed my first regulars game.

The players

Tobias; afraid you wern't around long enough to get to know well. As I said in our other game i think you should try being more aggressive on the board and less aggressive diplomatically.

Simon; Didn't have much contact with Simon really, all very brief.

Nick; I thought Nick would be a dangerous player and he was. we had many discussions and finally came to blows with the help of many lies about what russia and Italy were up to (from both sides I presume). I hope Nick didn't take anything personally as its just a game. A shame about his NMR as the game would have been better for him staying in.

Jamie; Well played mate. I communicated a fair bit with Jamie throughout the game but never really got any info from him about the game. as the game developed it was clear we were going to be the main players and Jamie always surprised me with his ability to guess my moves (particularly my convoy to Tus) and hurt russia. I don't blame him for hanging on for the solo as mine and Matts defence didn't exactly inspire confidence for a while.

Matt; i discovered I shared a number of interests with Matt and we talked a lot early in the game, this made me confident he would uphold our agreement in the face a french aggression.Matts was the main man early on but as his communication deterioated so did his position. You need to give up the online poker if you want to hold onto that high ranking my friend! later in the game it was very frustrating to watch him collapse in the face of equal Italian numbers which basically spelled the end of my chances of a solo.

As for Ally, excellent stuff, I hope to get you again as GM and I will try not to stuff up quite so many orders.

FRANCE (Nick Gibbons)

Ally,

Please just send my apologies to all for dropping out when I did. Way back, it was shaping up to be a very interesting game and it was only work and life pressures that stopped me from contributing. I will be sure to sign up in future only when I know I commit as much to the game as everyone else did. Thanks also to yourself for all your efforts (and understanding)

Nick

ITALY (Jamie Aitcheson)

All,

I bet you'd thought I'd forgotten ;) Very sorry for taking so long in getting round to writing it. I hope you enjoy it now that it's here. Is there any chance it could be added to the site, Ally?

And so Rummy-Nose Tetra comes to an end... my third full Diplomacy game (as opposed to Gunboat). It was also the first in which I got something you might call a 'result', although I care little for the stats - enjoyment is just as important to me. And this game was no disappointment: action-filled, tense, full of deception and tactical awareness... Okay, so enough build-up! Without further ado (there's been a long enough delay already), here's my story of RNT:

The game was set up to be a good one as it included a number of high-ranking players: Nick Gibbons, Matthew Myatt and Simon McInnes (who I had previously played in the brilliant game Iris). Austria (Simon) made it understood from the start that he preferred to co-operate with myself and with Germany. Since I already knew him, I thought there was a good chance we could make an alliance work out. At the same time, though, I was sounding out Russia on the possibility of a R/I alliance as well. He mentioned the Juggernaut, and although he claimed not to be a big fan he also said that he might have to go along with Turkey for a couple of turns. This started alarm bells with me and so of course I mentioned it to Austria, as of course we would be the first to lose out from an R/T pairing. I had been initially intending to begin with a traditional Italian opening: F(Nap) - ION; A(Rom) - Apu; A(Ven) Stands. But when the Juggernaut seemed likely I suggested the Key Lepanto opening, meaning that I would move to Trieste in S01 and then onwards to Serbia in the autumn. If done properly without any messing around, this had the potential to keep Turkey firmly in his corner and so we'd have a headstart on the Juggernaut. At this stage I had no intention of using the opportunity to betray Austria as so often happens with this opening. He didn't originally seem so keen on the idea but I continued to point out the need to act fast against R/T and eventually, and he (somewhat reluctantly I think) agreed.

This in fact fitted well with my discussions with Russia. He suggested that I move to Tyrolia and follow up by attacking Venice in A01. I replied that a move into Austria was on the agenda. Turkey also urged me to attack Austria early (which incidentally confirmed my suspicions about the Juggernaut). The A(Ven) - Tri move fitted perfectly as it could be read from any number of perspectives. So it seemed that at this stage I could keep my options open. It didn't seem as though anyone realised that we were actually carrying out a Key Lepanto, and judging from the EGSs now I think the deception worked well!

In terms of the western triangle, I particularly didn't want a hostile France breathing down my neck while I was looking east, especially if there was a Juggernaut on our hands. England had already told me he didn't want to attack France immediately and wouldn't change his mind unless both Germany and myself were to help him. I had no intention to move west, but I wasn't so sure about Germany. Tobias in his first communication with me had sharply told me to stay out of Tyrolia, which I found confusing as Italy and Germany often get along well. I assumed (and I told England this) that he didn't want Munich threatened because he was aiming for six centres, as there was little he could actually do to attack me even if I did move to Tyrolia. The idea here was to alarm England, who would hopefully pass the information on to France and hey presto - France heading Germany's direction rather than mine! Lo and behold France agreed not to build fleets in Marseilles or move any past the stalemate line, while I agreed not to go to TYS, GOL, WMS, or NAf.

And so S01 worked out well. I was in Trieste and the Key Lepanto was going to plan. France and England seemed to be working together and France had moved to Burgundy. Russia and Turkey had bounced in BLA, but did this mean there was no Lepanto or was it an agreed standoff?

In A01 I passed off the move to Trieste as opportunism while going into a lot of discussion with Austria what to do next in the Balkans - whether I should move to Serbia as first intended (which I wanted as I could get a second build) or do something else. I took this discussion as a good sign for our alliance. Eventually we agreed to make sure of our short term builds: I was to get Serbia as planned as Simon would go for Greece. There were also lots of shenanigans going on between Russia and Turkey, as well as between Turkey and Austria, over who should get Rumania. Russia seemed uncommitted at this point to attacking Austria, which suited me as I was still unconvinced that there was no Juggernaut and was still genuinely interested in sticking with Simon. As Simon said, "Either Russia and Turkey are very reluctant and distrusting allies, or they are putting together a ruse of admirable complexity." I don't think either of us were really sure! Anyway it all seemed to be working out fine with Austria - I even got permission to build in Venice from him since I was concerned at the possibility France might build A(Mar).

The Autumn 1901 adjudication turned out to be a surprise as I was still in Trieste. Apparently Simon had submitted revised orders which didn't arrive till after the deadline. This changed things. Also, Simon actually wanted me, strangely enough, to move to Tyrolia - obviously he trusted me, but this was offering up an opportunity to good to miss out on. England it turned out was keen for me to do this too as a means of propping up Germany, who was under threat. To everyone else it would look like I was tightening the noose on Austria! Meanwhile I agreed to move A(Tri) - Ser, ostensibly to bolster Simon's position against Turkey in the Autumn, but really intended so that I could land the killer blow on Austria, which I did in A02. He helped me into the Aegean Sea in order to force the disband of the Turkish fleet, while in a couple of inspired moves I took Greece and Albania. Austria was now surrounded as I built an army in Venice. All was going perfectly... heh heh heh. By A03 I was up to a cool eight centres.

Relations with France in the early part of the game were always tense. In fact he even moved into Piedmont at one point, although fortunately I was able to convince him to give it up quickly. In Autumn 1904 as well, just when I didn't need any more trouble, he started to invade the Mediterranean and I had to show that I wasn't going to stand for it. I was relying on his drawn-out struggle against England to prevent a western rival emerging. I could easily defend against his little incursion but what worried me was that he was leaving his homeland underdefended. I issued a firm warning telling him to get out of the Med or meet his doom, if I remember correctly :D Then communications broke off and France NMRd for the first time in A05. This first NMR was actually not as damaging as it could have been. If he retreated from WMS and put up a resistance to England then my chances of a solo were still very good. As it happened Nick even offered me a proxy(!) for S06 and of course I accepted. The only problem was that he hadn't contacted Ally about it and so NMRd for a second successive time. When he dropped into anarchy it began the second phase of the game. From then on I knew I would be hard pushed to achieve the solo I desperately wanted. England could clear up the French centres easily and then race me to 18 centres.

Much of the rest of the game was a gradual struggle between me and the E/R alliance. With a little tactical thinking and second-guessing of England and Russia's moves I was able to continue making gains while holding them both off. (A lot of experience playing Gunboat helped here.) I was trying my best to hang on to hopes of a solo, but as the game progressed (despite a turn where I was the only one to order!) it became impossible to achieve. Eventually there came a time when England was still growing while I was finding it hard to make progress against Russia. Although I was still leading on 14 centres, England actually had the better chance of the solo, especially as Russia seemed to be surrendering his centres to him! Up till then I'd voted down any draw proposals, still hoping for the solo myself, but now it was time to face up to the reality. I voted for the draw. I even got in touch with Matt to discuss how we could hold back England, who I thought probably saw his chances of the win and would still be pushing for it. I was basically prepared to concede anything - I wasn't going to come this far in the game and leave empty-handed. But thankfully we didn't have to enforce the stalemate and the draw passed. Maybe it was a bit of an anticlimax to a thrilling game, but I think it was the deserved result for everyone.

A few words on the other players:
Germany/Tobias: I hardly heard from you at all. Your aggressive tone made you a marked man in everyone's eyes and I'm not surprised you were first eliminated.
Turkey/Alan: I didn't hear much from you either despite frequently trying to get in touch. Mind you, I was mainly concerned with Austria and Russia and seeing as most of your units were armies I wasn't under any real threat.
Austria/Simon: I felt a bit guilty eliminating you so early as I wanted to work with you at first. I never intended the Key Lepanto to turn into a stab but suddenly I saw the opportunity of fast advancement and stabbing you was a no-brainer! There wasn't a lot you could do once you were boxed in.
France/Nick: Now if ever there was a dubious alliance this was it. :D It was almost as if you were jumping to pick a fight with me while I talked my way out of it! Seriously, you were an entertaining character and I'd relish the chance to play you again. It's a shame you couldn't have hung around longer as I needed you to persist to give me a good chance of the solo ;)
Russia/Matt: I always knew I was going to have to deal with you at some point, so even as I suggested an R/I alliance I knew I had to be sure of getting the bigger portion of Austria. You held in there even when you were up against it, and definitely deserved a part of the draw.
England/Andy: Well played. France's anarchy worked in your favour but you took advantage of it well. I predicted it would be a race to 18 centres from then on in but you seemed to have the trust of Russia to your credit, which I never achieved. You managed to effectively isolate me, which helped a lot in preventing me from winning.

Last of all, thanks to Ally for his flawless GM skills. This wasn't the first time I'd had you as GM and I certainly hope it isn't the last.

Cheers for the game everyone,

Jamie

RUSSIA (Matthew Myatt)

Well I have to say that I am well chuffed (Midlands for "over the moon") to get a 3 way draw out of this game when it looked odds on for me to get swallowed up by either of the two superpowers on their march to solodem.

The game started with me getting Russia with a lot to live up to because my only solo victory on Dip2000 came as Russia in my very first game about 3 years ago, since then I have partaken of 4 draws in 7 games (this one being my 5th in 8) with not a sniff of a solo along the way. It couldn't happen again, could it? ............... Well the short answer to that is "NO"!! But I'm still happy with the outcome nevertheless.

First communications as always dictated the direction of the game for me, most importantly with Germany. I had one very aggressive e-mail off Tobias telling me to forget about getting Sweden because he intended to stand me out, so I decided straight away to make the unorthodox move of A War - Sil, more as a bargaining chip than anything else, Germany moved to Denmak and I moved my fleet StP down to BAL to give me the upper hand. I was surprised at Germany's early stance, maybe he thought he could intimidate me from the start with a no nonsense approach, I have to say it backfired for him massively because I then managed to broker a deal with France where I would support him into Munich if he followed up by supporting me into Ber - which he did. So my one army invasion of Germany turned out to be a lot more successful than I could ever imagine and took Germany out of the game as an effective force in 1901. A bit of advice Tobias, it might be worth you taking a slightly less aggressive stance with your first communications in a game to avoid a repeat of this in the future.

By this time France had got himself embroiled in a war with England which was great for me, it was just time to decide which side I was on. I probably made a slight mistake by not committing more solidly to France at this point because he did ask for support on an attack on Belguim which as a gesture of goodwill to England I decided not to order, I was hoping to keep both as allies for a while at least because I didn't want to alienate England and give him an excuse to attack me in Scandanavia when I had other issues in the south. What I didn't expect was for France to take this non-support as an open act of war and to not work with me again in the game - a very extrem reaction I thought. So I sat back and watched with interest the developments in the Anglo/French war, in which France had the upper hand early doors with units actually on the English mainland but England managed to turn around with some excellent moves - and the result was put beyond doubt by France's NMR and anarchy. I have to say that France dropping out did give England an easy ride of it and I was forever looking over my shoulder at a potential English stab which never really materialised - thanks for that Andy.

Now onto the south where things were a lot more complicated. I had managed to broker an early alliance with Austria which looked quite strong for me until he stabbed me and took Rumania, I thought this was a bad mistake by Simon because he was already fighting with Italy and could not hope to survive an onslaught by both Italy AND Russia - which turned out to be the case.. This Austrian stab altered my early gameplan of going for Turkey as I then had to try to make peace with Turkey and fight off Austria who luckily was under intense pressure from Italy. As it happened both Austria and Turkey fell quite easily because of Italy's pressure from the other flank but this then brought about another problem of a rampant Italy - and Italy made his intentions quite clear by continuely harrassing my centres in the Balkans.

So by Autumn 1904 the game had developed into a 4 way E/F/R/I (EvF & RvI) battle with France soon to drop out. Things were not looking good for me though because I was then faced with 2 fronts against both Italy and England. At this point only Italy was attacking me, and England was still pretending to be my ally as he wanted me to concentrate on holding Italy back rather than have to worry about him, and he was also creating a second front for Italy in the Med ...... much to my relief. My major undoing in the latter part of the game was down to Italy's fantastic unit orders. I was always on the back foot with a relatively thin line spread along the whole map whilst Italy had a shorter line against me with more depth. That, along with the previously mentioned good ordering meant that Italy slowly but surely took centres off me over the course of the next 3 or 4 game years. I have to congratulate Jamie on this phase of the game, it was pure Gunboat and he kept on second guessing everything I tried doing to stop the rot. It was at this stage that I realised my only chance was to try to force a 3 way draw but with Italy fast gaining my centres this was looking a long shot. Luckily for me though, England had seen the danger and offered help in the form of forcing a disband of my northern fleet and also one of his centres so I could rebuild units in the east to try to set up a stalemate line against Italy. I was uncomfortably aware that England was then open to eat up my northern centres but I had little choice and I hoped that he would be deterred by the fact that if my line collapsed against Italy then he would more than likely lose the race to 18 centres. The Anglo/Russian alliance survived a massive scare in Spring 1908 when we both amazingly managed to NMR, I mixed up the week of the deadline and I gather that England sent his orders to the wrong place!! This gave Italy the edge for a while but nothing that could not be put right.

With this uneasy alliance we managed to stem the Italian tide both on the Russian front and in the Med. Jamie realised this and after a long, long time of no communication between us he wrote out of the blue and offered a treaty if I would move units to stop England going for the solo, which I was also sure he would at some stage. I sceptically agreed (I had after all known nothing other than aggression from Italy) as long as he did three things, firstly withdraw A Gal and keep this as a DMZ, secondly swap A Sev with a Fleet so I was not under any threat from there, and the third thing he had already said he was going to do which was to vote for the 3 way draw. England had already said that he was voting for the draw so I didn't let onto the fact that Italy was calling a truce as I thought this sign of Italian weakness might then tempt Andy to then go for the solo (a post draw e-mail confirmed that he might have been!!).

I didn't dare believe that the draw would go through but it amazingly did and I was the poorest member of a 3 way draw. My only strength at the end was that both Superpowers needed my paltry force to hold back the other Superpower - so I held the balance of power.

Thanks to Andy and Jamie for a good game to the end, apologies for being a thorn in both of your sides when a fairer result would probably have been a 2 way draw between the two of you ............... but hey? I'm not complaining!! Thanks as well to all of the other players who didn't last the game out, and thanks especially to Ally for overseeing the game with such dedicated proffesionalism.

Cheers,
Matt

GM (Ally Bain)

A shame about the anarchies however that is part of the game. The question is whether it did change the outcome of the game? Would it become a solo or a draw? I think it would have ended as a draw but not sure about the number involved. Either way, who cares as it was a three-way draw?

I'm not sure if you know but I do write a few articles & also stats. The results of this game have been added to; http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/alb_gsb/diplomacy/stats/normalendings.htm soworth you having a look.

In closing, the Rummy-Nose Tetra is off & swimming elsewhere so all the best to you & see you on the boards.
