AUSTRIA (Pete Smith)

From the top – Thank you Ally for running the game in your normal stile – on time, no drama’s and quick replies to anyone who asked questions.

Can I say sorry to RUSSIA (Mikey Lamont) for lying, and thank you to him for playing it out to the end.
Also sorry to GERMANY (Andy Powell) for lying and thank you also for playing till the bitter end.

ITALY (Brian Wansleeben and FRANCE (Herman v der Meulen), sorry for lying, but can not see that’s a good reason to walk away from a game and go into Anarchy?

Well done to ENGLAND (Joshua Ellery) for serving and fighting till the end, and a big thank you to my partner throughout the whole game TURKEY (Ian Pringle) who got a well deserved solo.

The game in a nutshell.
Teamed up with Turkey from start. Told Italy I was attacking Turkey.
Teamed up with France, told him I was attacking Italy.
Told Italy France was attacking him.
Told Germany that Russia was going to Turkey, France to Germany with England.
Told Russia that Turkey and Germany was attacking him.

So, Turkey and Austria are the real partnership.
Russia talks and thinks he has joined in with us.
France talks and does the same.
Italy backstabs but gets it in the neck from France.

From the start it was a well oiled F/E push, with the others I/R/G falling when ever they believed A or T.
Ian and I were doing very well until A1905 when I got hit by Italy, who was getting very upset, so went kamikaze.
See e-mails below to see what the plan was. After the A1905 turn came out

-------------------------------------

Good evening Ian,
Well my loyal partner, looking at the map, can we do anything?
It looks like it’s a clear F/E draw within the next few moves, and the only chance that could change is for one of them to turn on the other.
If it would help, more than happy for you to invade me to collect supply centres, but to be honest, the way that we have worked together, I can not see any advantage in that.

-------------------------------------

Hi Pete
I’ll have looked at the game and we can't win together. Nor, I think, can we prevent an E/F draw as they won't attack each other at the moment.
I had said that I wouldn't attack you. But as things stand, we get nothing. I don't think you can get a share under any scenario but I could as I’m not surrounded. So I would like to take up your offer to invade you!
My plan would be this: try to ally with F or E and say I intend to stab you. Then I do stab you (only it's not a stab really 'cos we've arranged it). I then turn to my intended ally and say "look I said I’d stab him and I did - now let’s go for the other one. I try to build up my forces and position either to be part of a 2 way draw or I might even win! How does it sound, mate? In return, if we ally in a future game, I will let you 'stab' me if it helps you to win.
Have a look at the situation and see what moves I would need to make to get the most gains quickest and I will do the same.
I'm minded to ally with England. What do you think?
Your mate still!! ….Ian

-------------------------------------

Well, the cunning plan worked out a treat.
France then backstabbed England and Josh joined the A/T alliance. France then played a few more moves then went walkies. Just before he went, Ian and I had moved so that when we had removed the French fleet threat, we could take out England. If you look at the end map, it was all set up but game end came first.

It was at this stage that I put forward that a Turkey solo should be called as Ian could get the 18 in a few moves.

So, to sum up.

Fun game to play, and thanks Ian for the way you played, look forward to meeting you again on the board, and Ally, once again, thank you for running the game.

Pete Smith.

ENGLAND (Joshua Ellery)

Ally,
My end game statement is below. Thanks again for job a well done with the GM duties. It's appreciated.

EGS Start

Well folks, what can I say. This is my first time playing England and after some hemming and hawing, France and I decided to team up against Germany. Germany put up a good fight and we could not have have success without Russia's help. After a hard fought battle and Italy's disappearing act, I felt like Herman and I would continue our friendship until the end of the game but it was not meant to be. After making some gains in the mid-game, Herman fatally stabbed me indicating that a Franco-English empire was not cards. With Austria on his heels (or heel since at this point he had only one unit!), I had no choice but to try and convince Turkey to ally with me instead of with France. In the back of my head, I figured Turkey was in the better position to force a win and I was in no position to argue about how to divide spoils. Since I didn't see any way to keep even with Turkey, I was content to help him against France and play for survival rather than a 2 way draw.

It is unfortunate (but perhaps all part of a long game) that we experienced 2 countries in anarchy. I can't help but think how the game may have unfolded had this not have happened, especially Italy. All in all, though, I had fun and enjoyed playing with everyone. See you next time!

TURKEY (Ian Pringle)

I enjoyed this game, especially so as it is my first on-line victory but the win was a bit hollow because of the France NMR.

I don't recall all that went on early because I lost early emails when I updated my computer but the game seemed to fall into 3 stages:

At the start, I had a really tough decision - whether to ally with Mikey (Russia) or Pete (Austria). in the end, it was Pete and it probably came about as a result of us swapping phone numbers and doing some old-fashioned diploming. I had to attack Mikey but was sad to do so because I found him easy to correspond with and he was really professional even when he knew he was going to be eliminated. Thanks for being a great neighbour and I hope that we are in a future game as allies. It didn't seem immediately apparent that France and England were going to ally so it was a case of Pete and I getting what we could in the south and east. I remember very early on not taking a centre and that held progress up by at least three seasons. We found it difficult to expand as we wanted because of Italy's erratic behaviour; we didn't know if an NMR would be followed by anarchy or if he would move. In many ways, earlier Italy anarchy would have helped becausee we could have got the seas. We had to keep guarding in case Brian came back in and attacked Pete.

When Brian did eventually go into anarchy, Herman and Josh had established a powerful alliance. We tried to help Andy (Germany) but it was too late. Sorry we didn't work more closely with you earlier, Andy. At this point, France and England held 17 centres to our 12 and we were going nowhere. There was an impasse in the south and I couldn't break into ION. I had manged to push through Russia and into Germany but couldn't get further.Pete and I had a long chat and we decided that we couldn't possibly do anything more if we stayed as we were. We decided that I would 'stab' Pete and this is what duly happened. I removed 3 of Pete's centres which took me to 11 units with Pete's satellite unit left to suppport. There was no way I would take that unit - if 18 centres had depended on me taking Pete's last unit, I would have stuck at 17.

It gave some impetus but I still couldn't advance navally. Then we had a stroke of good fortune - Herman stabbed Josh. I was surprised but not (if that makes sense). Herman and I were part of a draw in an earlier game but he admitted later that, if the game had proceeded, he would have stabbed me. If he wanted to win this game, his stab was correct but I feel that he did so a season or so too early. He could have done more major damage and crippled Josh. As it was, his stab simply acted to get Josh to join our side - France now couldn't win and I think he knew it. I was ready to try something different in the sea areas to try to get a quad attack on ION but I was ready for the draw. Diploming at this point was a tad difficult because of Josh's comp problems but I mnaged to get a mobile number for him (amazing what you can find on Google!) and we kept things going.

Then came the first France NMR and that was the breakthrough that was needed. It is disappointing that France went into anarchy though it guaranteed me the win. I worked out that I could have got 18 centres without taking any off Josh. So the game was duly put to bed and it finished a bit anticlimatically.

My thanks to all in the game, especially my ally Pete who sacrificed any chance he had of winning so that I might have the chance. Josh, it was great also playing with you and thanks to Mikey and Andy for your part. Brian and Herman - it was a shame you went into anarchy.

Finally, a great thanks to Ally - immaculately GMd throughout.

I look forward to renewing lots of acquiantances in a later game.

GM (Ally Bain)

Two Anarchies isn't good but that is still part of the game & therefore no-one should be rude to Ian Pringle (Turkey) & therefore say, well done!

To the other four (I think I've got my maths right...7 Players - 1 Winner - 2 Anarchies = 4), yes to the other four, thanks for playing until your bitter end. Look on the bright side, it's better to be a 'bitter end' than a 'lager end'.

As you know I do keep stats & your openings & Endings have been added. By clicking on the link below you'll get to the introduction of Stats. BTW for Endings' stat, this was the first time Turkey have won & the number shown are 40 games I've either played or GMd.

Very soon, 'Admiral' Gunboat Competition III will have it's Waiting List open. The Competition Gamestart will be sent out in early Feb. The link below takes you to that are.

Either way, see you on the boards.
