GAMESTART INFORMATION

=============================================================
Diplomacy 2000 Gamestart
=============================================================

Welcome everybody, to the e-mail Diplomacy game of :

=============================================================
LOMBARDO
=============================================================

The game is named in honor of the great bald winger Attilio Lombardo which played for the Sampdoria soccer team from 1989 to 1995. Lombardo, nicknamed “Popeye” by Sampdoria’s supporters was incredibly quick and probably the best winger ever seen in Marassi (Sampdoria stadium). If you follow soccer you probably know him!

I am Andrea Pellegrino and your GM for this game. All orders, queries, and correspondence about this game should be sent to me:

andrea.pellegrino@elsag.it

In turn, I shall adjudicate the moves and e-mail you all with the results each season, and post them on the website along with a map. (If there is any discrepancy between the e-mail adjudication, the website adjudication, and the map, always use the e-mail adjudication but please let me know because I`m not infallible).

The line-up is :

AUSTRIA: Ethan Preston ep@eplaw.us
ENGLAND: Nick Wells nicholas.wells@talk21.com
FRANCE: John Lofton eeyore94122@yahoo.com
GERMANY: Igor Stavchansky superevan63@yahoo.com
ITALY: Tony Niccoli tony1n@yahoo.com
RUSSIA: Stef Meihuizen smeihuizen@zonnet.nl
TURKEY: Bob Cassells bobbcass@aol.com

GM: Andrea Pellegrino andrea.pellegrino@elsag.it

The country allocation was very easy, four of you have their first choice the other their second one!
This game will be run to approximately three week deadlines (see point [14] further down), and your first deadline for Spring 1901 is:

=============================================================
NEXT DEAD LINE Spring 1901 is: *** 2 PM GMT Thursday APRIL 28 2004. ***
=============================================================

GMT mean "Greenwich Mean Time", in order to have a common date I use GMT as reference for deadline even if I live in Italy.
If you live in a different time zone and are not sure how this relates to your zone then have a look to http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock or ask me and I'll try to help.

I would like to hear from all of you as soon as possible, (ie immediately), supplying me with a set of provisional Spring 1901 orders.
These orders may be changed at any time up to the deadline of course.
The reason I ask for provisional orders is because no game is allowed to start with any missing orders in Spring 1901, so if a player is going to be replaced it would be best to get it sorted as soon as possible. Once I have seven sets of S01 orders I`ll let you know, confirming both the line-up and the S01 deadline, however you can start to diplome as soon as you have read the following :

=============================================================
RULES AND GM POLICIES
=============================================================
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY, and with particular attention point [7],[9],[10] and [12]
and if there is anything more you wish to know, are not sure of, or needs further clarification, then please ask. It`s what I`m here for.

[1] This game will be run to the Diplomacy 2000 houserules. If you haven't read them then I suggest you visit the Diplomacy 2000 website at http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk/dip2000/diprules/diprules.htm and do so, and even print them off and keep them handy. Also check out the FAQ at http://www14.brinkster.com/dip2k/faq.asp .

The Diplomacy 2000 rules apply to ALL Dip2000 games, nevertheless every GM has its own policy which apply to its game! (if you do not like a GM policy you can ask not to be assigned to a game he is GM'ing)

Point [2] to [5] resume some of the most important DIP2000 rule.
Point [6] to [19] describe my own policy: so read it and you'll know what to expect from me!

[2] The most important rule is that deception of the GM is not permitted under any circumstances.

[3] All players are expected to participate until their role in the game ends - either the game being completed (and this could be over a year in real time), or the player being eliminated. If you don`t think you can give that level of commitment then let me know now so that I can arrange for you to be replaced. In the event of any drop-outs (two consecutive misses) after the game has started, the country concerned will be placed in anarchy and all units will stand unordered for the rest of the game. The player dropping out will not be replaced, and in addition will almost certainly not be allowed into any other Diplomacy 2000 games.
PLEASE do not drop out, if you have real problem and you really cannot follow up the game tell me, it may be I can help in suggesting how to handle that!

[4] The game will be run on a `2-season per game year` basis, so retreats should be sent along with all orders, and builds and disbands should be submitted along with Autumn (Fall) orders. There are no separate seasons for the retreat and build/disband phases.
You may specify multiple retreats (e.g. A(Bud) retreats to Vie,Tri would cause A(Bud) to retreat to Vie unless Vie was occupied or otherwise unavailable to retreat to, in which case it would retreat to Tri).
You may also specify conditional retreats, builds and disbands (e.g. if A(Bud)-Ser succeeds build A(Bud); if A(Bud) retreats to Vie build A(Tri); otherwise build F(Tri)). However please be careful that conditional instructions are not ambiguous.

Be very careful with these conditional retreats/builds/disbands.
Make sure that every eventuality is included, and if not then finish with "Otherwise build.....". If you order "Build A(Bud), A(Vie), A(Tri)" I just take the first 1,2, or 3 that is available. Retreats may be conditional on any eventuality in the season (Spring or Autumn) just adjudicated.
Builds and disbands may also be conditional on the events of the season just adjudicated, plus the retreats that have taken place, or on the number of builds (or disbands) that you or any other player are due to.
Do not make anything conditional on things like "If Austria attacked Italy then...." as this is subjective.

It may help to read the following article http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk/dip2000/chat/ordersarticle.html called 'Writing Orders for Diplomacy', and do behave as suggested in it as if your GM was the most stupid person you know.....be clear, complete and careful.

[5] Be very careful in using abbreviation. Take a look to the Map abbreviations at http://www14.brinkster.com/dip2k/mapandnames.gif (also in attachment) if you're unsure exactly where the provinces are. I will not accept misspelled Abbreviation order in any circumstances and will treat them as 'Misorder'. Please do not use Nor (you should use Nwy), Liv (you should use Lvn for Livonia and Lpl for Liverpool) and other similar commonly used (in face to face game) abbreviation as I will misspell them.

If you are not confident with Abbreviation then use the complete province names: I will accept them even badly misspelled as long as it is clear what is the intention of the player!

While I rather you using the DIP200 abbreviation's showed in the attached map, I will also accept Abbreviation listed in the English Diplomacy board rulebook!
Also I will consider misordered fleet ordered to coastal province with two coast if you do not specify the coast you are ordering too, that is if the fleet can enter either one!

[6] Normally I will not read and answer your messages during week-end, so if you mail me in late Friday, do not expect an answer until Monday morning.

[7] I will acknowledge receipt of all orders, so if you don`t receive an acknowledgement then you know I haven`t received your e-mail. In that case YOU are responsible to resend your order, until you receive a receipt! Wait at least 48 hours before starting to worry (see also point [6])!

[8] I would advise that you send provisional orders to me as soon as possible each season. This is a good habit as PCs and servers have a habit of crashing at the most awkward moments, or illness might strike, or other commitments might cause you to forget the deadline. You can always change your orders as many times as you wish at any time up to the deadline. When changing your orders send a FULL new set of orders (including retreats/builds/disbands if necessary, and any press), and not
just advise me of the changes referred to the previous one. I will always adjudicate using ONLY the last set of order received even if there are clearly stated in it reference to the previous one!

[9] I will accept orders (or revised orders) at any time up to when I adjudicate. This will normally be in the evening of the deadline day.
I won`t deliberately delay adjudication if orders are missing.
After deadline I may or may NOT download my email, this depend on my personal situation.
For example: if deadline is at 4:00 PM GMT and I last downloaded my email at 4:01 PM GMT then I may adjudicate at 8:00 PM WITHOUTH further downloading my email, in that case orders sent after deadline will NOT be used. If I did not had occasion to download my email just after 4:00 PM GMT, I will download it in the evening and then adjudicate, in that case orders sent after deadline and in my inbox before downloading will be used!
If you miss a deadline then don`t complain because I certainly won`t re-adjudicate the game. Just ensure you get your orders in for the following season.

[10] Even if I adjudicate in the evening (see point [9]) I will normally mail you the adjudication mail and upload the adjudication to the Dip2000 Site in the following morning! (this because normally the mail will be in the outbox of my notebook until the following morning when I connect to the Net!).

I would strongly advise you NOT to discuss the game with other players after the deadline until you see the adjudication. If you have not received an adjudication (or explanation for any delay) within 24 hours of the deadline then please e-mail me, and if no reply is received first look at the message board on the site in case there is some message from me and then e-mail Tom Tweedy at tom@lancedal.demon.co.uk

[11] I will normally send you a message to remember you the deadline three day before it, but this is just a courtesy service and If I fail to do that you are still requested to meet the deadline and I WILL adjudicate no matter what! So please in case I fail to send such a message remember this is not an excuse to delay adjudication or re-adjudicate!

[12] Please ensure all set of orders contain in the subject line: the name of the game, the season, the country you are playing, the word "Order" and a serial numbering of the order you sent me for that season. It will help my filing system and make life simpler for me.
An example of a complete and correct subject for this game is: 'LOMBARDO: Turkey Order S01 (2)" meaning that for the game 'LOMBARDO' Turkey is sending order for season Spring 1901 and it is its second set of order (which obviously substitute the first one!). I will obviously accept all other format of subject containing the same information!

[13] Please don`t send any attachments with your e-mails unless I ask, as I only delete them. I normally attach an updated map to the adjudication email, in case this is
in conflict with your email server security policy please inform me asap so that I will stop attaching the map and inform all other player that they are supposed to download it from the Dip2000 site pages dedicated to this game.

[14] Deadlines will normally be three weeks apart, but will depend on my own personal circumstances (in case I have problem I will always use a longer deadline never a shorter one as you signed for a minimum 3 week deadline!). Generally speaking I won`t accept requests to extend deadlines for your personal reasons, except in extreme circumstances. Holidays, exams, and working away, I don`t consider to be extreme circumstances, and it`s the responsibility of each player to ensure their orders reached me on time.
Also I will fix longer deadline in August and in Christmas as I am in Holiday and hopefully you are too! In this case I may (or not) ask your opinion in advance.
[15] Press will be accepted and it is welcome provided it is submitted along with a complete set of orders. It will be added to the end of the adjudication exactly as you submit it. To have Press it must be submitted with your orders and not separately. Press can be conditioned to event of the current season as moves, build, disband or whatever. Press from me will carry the handle 'Pelle', which no other player may use. I reserve the right to withhold press I consider abusive or overly provocative.

[16] After compiling the adjudication I will make a map of the game in the form of a GIF file and send it to you in the same e-mail. Please inform me if you don't wish the map to be e-mailed to you. (If there is any discrepancy between the e-mail adjudication, the website adjudication, and the map, always use the e-mail adjudication). As long as the e-mail adjudication is correct I will not re-adjudicate the season, but simply correct the map or the uploaded on DIP2000 version!

[17] I will post a copy of each season's adjudication and map at:
Adjudication: http://www12.brinkster.com/aparka/showadj.asp?game=Lombardo
Map: http://www12.brinkster.com/aparka/showmap.asp?game=Lombardo

You will be able to access previous adjudications and maps at:

Archive: http://www12.brinkster.com/aparka/seasonchoice.asp?game=Lombardo

There will also be links to the game available on the dip2000-site in the “Games” section.

[18] Upon completion of the game if you will no NMR I will upgrade your status to “Regular” enabling you to sign up for Regular games in the future (for those of you who are not already Regulars). By the way player in Dip2000 are created in a 'new' status which allow to subscribe to just a standard game (only one). In case a player demonstrate reliable, and ask for it, GM can upgrade it to 'normal' status before they end their first game (This will require some time in their first game) . 'Normal' status allow a player to join more standard game at the same time.

[19] If you like you can cc or bcc me in your mails to each other, and do feel free to send me your game plans or vision now and again.

Final Notes
=============================================================

Please remember above all else to enjoy yourself and have fun playing the game.

That`s all I have to say at the moment. Please send me a set of provisional Spring 1901 orders as soon as you can, and if you have any queries then please don`t hesitate to ask me. Write to each other often (it`s what the game is all about) and I hope it`s a good game and that you all enjoy it.

A good way to start (but not compulsory) is to send out to your fellow players and the GM a brief introduction of yourself explaining your past diplomacy experience, your bio and whether you know some of the other players in the game: I know none of you.

About me:
I am Italian and live in Camogli (Genova) near Portofino, check this out on a map and you'll understand why normally you won't hear from me during week-end: no Internet on the beach...still! (Ok, that's already old, I got my GPRS PCMCI card......but I won't use it on the beach!)

I am 36 , I have a wife and a two and an half year "old" boy.

I like to journey, I used to play Bridge and practice Canyoning (too long to explain what it is right now but if you are curious ask me again or check it out on www.cicarudeclan.com). Other online games include a famous online free soccer management game named Hattrick (www.hattrick.org if you are interested in soccer management game you should try it, but be advised that it is a really addicting and time consuming experience!). Also I like cooking, and if you are interested can suggest to you all kind of original italian receipt for "pasta"...

Other than that I am a supporter of Sampdoria soccer team, which by the way is currently fifth in the Italian Serie A and very likely running for qualification in next European competitions. We won an Italian Championship back in 1990/91 and played an European Champions League Final with Barcellona at Wembley (London) back in 1991/92 (and unfortunately lost it.....but that was nevertheless our top result ever!)

I play Diplomacy since 2000, got to know it from an Italian Friend, tried to play in an italian site but I was not satisfied. Then I found Dip2000 and enlisted for my first completed game: a Win!
I am still trying to convince some friend to try it FF, ....although it's very difficult to find 6 friend available!

Cheers,
Andrea
