As he waited for three of his harem to dress and leave the room the Sultan wondered what news the emissarry from the Southern Steppes brought. The incompetence of his late general of the eastern army had meant that his troops had returned to Ankara rather than clash with the Russians in Armenia, such reluctance to face the enemy could not be tolerated and the man had paid with his life. On the other hand the prudent suggestion of the commander of the Constantinople City guard to ask the navy to lead the sortie against the Austrians had been wise in light of the surprise attack by a group of "renegade" Russian Buccanears. The incident had resulted in considerable loss of Russian face and it was with some anticipation he awaited the Emissary. It had been an interesting year and he could only hope that his neighbours see his peaceful intentions. They should not however mistake his desire for peace with an unwillingness to protect what was his by birthright.
