ENGLAND (Wayne Read) Wayne Read - England – EGS This really is a game that Turkey should’ve won quite easily, frankly I’m amazed that we were allowed to form a stalemate line and force the draw. Here is the view of the English Commander: 1901 Things start badly with France in the Channel and Russia opening Northwards. I gamble on France being more concerned with Bel and decide to secure Nwy with my Army – the gamble works and I’m able to build F(Lon) 1902 Germany is under pressure from Russia, while I’m under pressure from France, we both decide we need a friend and in the spring support each other to Swe. Germany eventually moves there in the Autumn as Russia takes Ber. By the end of the year France has 3 Fleets against my 3, but I’ve managed to get to MAO, and Germany is in Gas so France has to defend more SC than I do. 1903 A very bad year I’m forced to move back to defend NTH as France gets a Fleet to Bel and Germany’s Army behind the French lines gets disbanded. By the end of the year things look grim F & R = 6 SC G & A = 5 SC E & T = 4 SC And bizarrely Italy is still on 3 having not taken Tun yet!? Just shows that you should never give up as the game ended with T=17 and E=13 1904 A breakthrough! Russia moves out of Stp allowing me in for a build, The extra Fleet makes my homeland secure, but more importantly Mos is wide open so another build is on the cards. At the end of the year T is in Sev, I is in Rum, R is in Con and A is in Smy!!! 1905 The start of my growth. Russia anarchies allowing me into War, and France guesses wrongly in Iberia allowing me to take Spa. I only get to build one, but it’s nice to have one in the bank. 1906 Security! France disbands a Fleet and I now have 6 Fleets facing 2 French and 1 German Fleet in the North. 1907 Italy is being a pain in Russia, but other than that things look good. 1908 Turkey rescues his homeland and the Balkans are looking strangely empty. Meanwhile I’m waging war on both France & Germany (E=8, F/G=10) – is this wise? 1909 My growth is stalled while Turkey is positioning to expand. 1910 The lines are drawn. It’s A v T in the south and E v F/G/I in the North. Luckily France manages to position his Fleets in Spa nc and Gas where is is a simple matter for me to keep them there. I bet he was kicking himself for that! 1911 Turkey draws level. 1912 Austria has a disastrous NMR and loses 2. With France effectively neutralised I concentrate on eliminating Germany. 1913 England=11 (No Change), Turkey=14, +3! Time to signal friendly intentions to everyone! S1914 I support 2 French units, 2 German units and the Italian unit to signal my intention to try and stop Turkey. I also convoy to Nwy to stalemate Stp. Meanwhile Turkey doesn’t remove the Austria unit in Tyr, doesn’t move to Boh, or Sil, or Rom?? Why has he stopped, surely he needs to be pushing to get past the stalemate line? A1914 Turkey finally moves forward, Italy is eliminated and it turns out that my support for Germany was a ploy, as I take Mun. Sorry to Germany for that, but I felt happier with my units in the area, and also saw the opportunity to reduce the draw. France moves forward to support Austria in Tun and I move into Spa, I hope that France doesn’t see this as an attack though, as it’s necessary to stalemate GOL. S1915 Turkey takes Mun to get to 17 but I take Ber. I now have Stp and Mun stalemated and units in place to stop Mun from advancing. France and Austria have Tun sorted, so the only hole is around GOL & Mar. A1915 I move my Armies South to take position in Gas, Bur and Ruh and the stalemate position is complete. S1916 Turkey NMRs and the 4-way draw is passed. Which would’ve happened anyway. It was really touch-and-go at the end and we only just got the stalemate line in place in time. If Turkey had been slightly more aggressive earlier on I think he’d have won easily. S1914 was the vital season though, by stalling his units for just that one season he gave us just enough time to get into position. Thanks to everyone for the game, it was fun. I was impressed with the tenacious defence put up by both Germany & France and the way that Italy fought on for so long. Also in the way Austria managed to position himself at the end to be included in the draw. An extra mention to France for recognising we needed to work together at the end, and throwing caution to the wind by trusting that I’d do the same, I hope I didn’t give you too much of a scare when I decided to eliminate Germany at the last minute :o) Too bad for Turkey. And a special thanks to Andy for his great GMing.

ITALY (Robert Lange) Well, this was my first game of gunboat and even though the result saw me missing out on the solo by the narrowest of margins it was great fun. I look forward to seeing what the other players thought of my insane wanderings. I found myself on the back foot from day one - I accidentally took an anti austrian stance (which I decided to follow up on) and spent most of the first half of the game defending (quite well I thought ;) my little peninsula to the overwhelming force of the austrian who, with his russian ally, was also taking out turkey. So I did what I had to do and proped up turkey a little bit which kept me static in ION also. I realised the only way out was to hope turkey could turn the tide in his much more even contest (at least it was after Russia's anarchy) and come to my rescue. Unforunately in the long run Turkey proved to have no morals whatsoever and eliminated me instead. Between the initial austrian onslaught and the terminal Turkish domination I spent a lot of time sight-seeing through Russia and playing guessing games with England and Austria in a desparate bid for survival - which was a lot of fun. Lessons learned 1 - gunboat adjudications can occur before deadlines! 2 - much better to be one strong player than rely on an ally as you never know what on earth they are going to do or who is going to support whom. I'll probably sign up for a gunboat again sometime to see if I've got the hang of it after all. Oh, and thanks of course to Andy for GMing in his usual professional manner - cheers!

GM (Andy Scott) Game Jupiter was a game that potentially had it all, some great players with some great idea's and some playrs not gunboat experienced but willing to learn the differences well. To be honest though it all went a bit wrong with Russia's early NMR! That set the tone for the rest of the game! Up until then Russia had bee double teaming Turkey with Austria and while it hadn't killed the sultan quickly as I suspect they both would have wished it did keep him penned up. Once the Tsar saw fit to abandon the game (and no I never found out why and yes he is banned!) then it was just a matter of time before the Sultan got lose and when he did he was ruthless. Obviously this meant a complete change in the West as England desisted in his attempts to destroy France and Germany to face the Ottoman threat which eventually lead to a 4 way. That's not to take it away from those who stayed the course or stayed as long as they had units at any rate! Just a perfect example of how an Anarchy can completely change the course of the game!! I must however apologise for the length of time it has taken me to get these EGS up. I have thought about it many times and something always seem to come up. All I cn do is apologise profusely and say at last here it is :-))) Andy
