ENGLAND (Antonio Chagas)

This was my first attempt at gunboat dip. A great kudo goes of course to Andy, who has been impeccable dealing with what has seemed a difficult game in the beginning.
I was given England - another first for me as long as dip2000 is concerned. And I tried to define my sphere of action right from the beginning, signaling France that I would welcome an alliance based on the occupation of the English Channel. I even supported France's entering Brest in 1901, but unfortunately I think that was taken as an act of war... Since then, I spent all turns escaping from France. Well, I guess France deserved to win after all... Thank you all for some good moments."

FRANCE (Peter Hawkins)

This was a long game so I hope I can remember everything ok...
Thanks Andy for running it faultlessly and thanks to the other players for making it an enjoyable and challenging game.
It started with a minor attack from England and non agression from Germany and Italy so I moved against England. Down south Italy and Austria were fighting, which was giving Turkey a little bit of leeway.
Meanwhile it was slow going v England but I was looking as though I was about to get somewhere when Germany attacked me. I managed to get Liverpool but Germnay was in Burgundy. So the attack on England was put on hold and I manged to get Germany out with a bit of a lucky guess of his intentions. My fleets could now keep England occupied while my main force of attack now switched to Germany. Germanys line looked solid but I managed to get a fleet into the North Sea, outflanking him.
Meanwhile down south Italy and Turkey were now involved in a massive fight. Turkey looked slight favourite. Russia was being slowly nibbled away by everyone, but he helped me when his northern fleet came down into Germany.
So just when things were looking hopeful, Italy sent a fleet west. I now had to defend against Italian and English fleets behind my line. Things were suddenly not looking so rosy. I lost Brest to Italy, which I felt could help as if Italy built an army it might help to hold Turkey up. Turkey was beginning to look dangerously strong. When the Italian armies went north rather than holding Austria I realised it was time to put some pressure against Italy. Only one fleet could be spared at first but luckily Germany finally collapsed and I got a couple of builds to reinforce the med. I headed that way, ignoring the English and Italian fleets in my rear, and managed to push onto Tunis. I now had spare untis to concentrate against Engalnd again. It was enough. I could hold Tunis, finish off the north and hold 18 centres. England put up a tough fight but it was all over. Turkey held most of the rest of Europe but could never get past the West Med in time.

ITALY (Yousuf Shaikh)

This game was a bit of a tough nut for me as Italy. The first part of the game was a desperate struggle against Austria and inch by inch I managed to hold on until Austria (poor friendless Austria, clobbered from all sides) collapsed. Unfortunately it was Turkey who got the upper hand. My balance and dispositions of fleets and armies was all to pot and I never really managed to gain an advantage against Turkey.
Turkey played a brilliant game against me, outguessing most of my moves in the process. Meanwhile in the West, France was growing. I made a desperate gamble. I dispatched a fleet West, yes it left me even more vulnerable to Turkey, but perhaps Turkey would read the signs. 'Time to ease up pounding the poor Italians and time to train the guns on France?'.
The valiant Italian (contradiction in terms?) expeditionary force did brilliantly occupying supply centres in Iberia, Brest and Iberia again, thus harassing the French in the rear and tying up a few Units.
Unfortunately, Turkey, tactically brilliant but strategically wanting did not respond as hoped and the result says it all. France won with 18 Supply Centres. Turkey and Italy share the wooden spoon, it matters not that Turkey had 15 centres and Italy was reduced to 1. Congratulations to France and commiserations to Turkey for not quite making it.
Thanks to my fellow players for the challenge and last but not least, many thanks to our GM, Andy Scott.

TURKEY (Nick Cawthorne)

Turkey did a few good moves which included convoying an army CON to ARM which caught Russia completely unprepared at the beginning of the game and never recovered. Also supporting Austria giving Italy the impression the move from Turkey would be by sea. Italy responded by building two fleets resulting in five fleets and two armies. Turkey then attached Aus by land Italy did not recover from this imbalance in forces.
The key turning point in the game was Rus Fleet StP attacking and destabilising the entire German army. France just had to walk through what was left. In the absence of this France would also have had difficulty taking England.
France made few errors and was very efficient in the attacks on Germany and England. Letting Italy and England behind the lines nearly however cost France the game.
Turkey was too slow throughout the game in the initial attacks on Aus and the destruction of the Italian armies in the Balkans. Turkey should have ceased attacks in the Italy proper earlier which may have allowed defence of Tunis with Turkeys assistance. It is interesting to note that the game could reach conclusion with very little contact and no relative gains between France and turkey. In general a very good game with a number of strong countries surviving for many years.
Nick.

GM (Andy Scott)

First off my apologies to you all for the dreadful delay in getting these EGS up. I have no excuses, I simply failed to make a note and so obviously then completely forgot to do it!
If it hadn't been for someone else asking me about it you could have gone another six months or so before anything happenned!
Any way the game itself I thought quite a good, Antonio needs to cut out some of those NMR's but he knows this already :-))
Whilst they made his life harder I'm not sure they affected the games outcome at all.
The winner was in my opinion thouroughly deserved, Peter attacked brilliantly and ruthlessly but also showed a good board awareness in not attacking when someone else would have benefitted more.
Everything else of note has I believe been already said and as this is so late I will keep it brief.
However a big thank you to all the players who kept going right to the end, some in very tiring circumstances.
I look forward to meeting you across a dip board soon.
Regards,
Andy.
