ITALY (Greg PierceI)

First off, I'd like to thank Andy for a great game!
Being Italy in the game, is full of choices from the beginning... Go hard or sit the fence... I decided to be proactive and Austria decided to leave Trieste open. It was about then that I decided to put all my eggs in one basket and attempt to forge an alliance with Russia. It took a few seasons, but finally it happened.
Austria and Turkey put in a marvellous defence, though... It was truly hard slogging to get through!
This tough defence enabled France to put the finishing touches on England and most of Germany, so by the time we were able to look west, it was pretty much stalemate city (at least in the Med!).
I'm quite happy that the EGP went through, as I was starting to get quite paranoid about a Russian stab (which I was woefully prepared to defend against!). Although, if the game had continued, it would have been interesting to see if we could have broken through Burgundy in the next couple of seasons...
Good game all and thanks again to Andy for a great game!
Later,
Greg.

RUSSIA (Ryan Kenny)

Well im going to start rather conventially by saying a big Thank-you to Andy Scott for his great GM'ing in Uranus. He was always punctual in ajudicating...in fact i dont have any recolection of him being late on any..Also i wish to thank him for his help with other aspects that he has helped me out with during the past few weeks. When i had a question to ask him he always got back to me immediatly with a very pleasing answer. Thanks Andy..
As for the game...well...i guess this is what happens when you forget to vote eh frenchy??
01:
First off let me explain that my memory is worse than that of a goldfish's so things may be a variant or the truth..
Ok, well to begin with i set about trying to be neutral as obviously i had no way of communicating with other players. I figured if i started too aggressive and grew too early i would be victimised afterwards.. I moved to Gal in S01 in anticipation of either being bounced or having 2 on Rum in the fall without handing over BLA to the turk. Thankfully the latter happened and i was able to take Rum in the autumnn turn. I got the one build that year and placed it in Mos for two reason..Firstly i was trying not to be on the wrong end of a 2-way alliance so tried to be fairly neutral....still. Secondly I wasnt sure as to what Germany or England would build. If they both built fleets i would need to run it up to StP to cover or to push into Scandinavia if the German and Englishman started fighting. Also if things went ok in the North but horribly in the South I could run it down there to help things out..
Luckily for me Italy seemed fairly anti-Austria as he took Trieste and Turkey appeared at first to be anti-Italy by building another fleet. This worked well for me as i could dispose of Austria with Italy and presumably Turkey, then pick on and ally to help against the other..
02:
I decided to move the army north. I figured austria was going to be decapitated so it will become rather congested down there anyway. A glorious Russia always has control of scandinavia and so i set about that in 02. I also moved the army North so that i could continue pushing into Sweden whilst bouncing England if he attempted to move to StP. It seemed to work on two levels for me.
In the South I took Bud and Italy Vienna. All of the Austrian home supply centres were now under our control and it was only S02!!
On a downer i stupidly forgot to order F(Sev) so effectively handed it to the Turk..Doh!
I realised if Italy wanted to he could push me right out of austria and onto Warsaw. Turkey was not in a position to take anything from me so in self defense i chose Italy as my ally and tried to support him into Ser from Bud..
In the north things took a turn for the better. England (i thought it was good anyway) i supported England into Sweden and moved to Norway. I figured if this happened it would separate the English fleets and he would be unable to recover because of an agressive frenchman.. This worked handsomly and I got Norway, and England Sweden. The Kaiser forgot to order builds in 01 which made this all the more easy. With that build I built A(StP) to try to push and take it all and then push into Germany.
03:
I supported myself into Sweden from Norway and moved A(StP)-Norway and thus took control of all Scandinavia. Great!
In other news Italy was moving to Serbia and we begun our mutual trust and anticipation of each other's moves.. He also moved to Alb which gave him another border on Greece so i presumed he was ani-Turkish otherwise he would have supported the Sultan in.
Turkey attempts to take Rum but fails which cements Italy's and mine alliance against him.
In the Autumn Turkey seals his fate by moving to Armenia with an Army whilst Italy moves into EAS with a nice green fleet. In the North I support and halt proceedings to see what headway is being made in the western triangle but move F(GOB)-BAL to be safe and get in position. With the gain from Sweden im now in the lead on 8 dots but that damn frenchy gets to 7 so im in no substancial lead. I figure the Balkans are already congested and my alliance with Italy is going fairly well so i build A(War) to start the German conquest.
04:
Italy pushes into AEG, whilst the turk forgets to order a retreat for his fleet there. That opens up Smy as a certainty for Italy in the Autumn. I move my army into Pru to get two on Berlin, but i was hoping to get Den..but the kaiser bounced me. Oh well..no big deal i can take it next turn if i wish. Germany cant commit many or any units against me because of those 4 Frech armies knocking at his door. I have made no leeway in the south...but neither has Turkey and with Italy about to waltz into his home supply centres i hope the tide will turn. Sure enough in the autumn the Italian takes Smy and the Frenchy moves into Ruhr. May the carve-up begin..
05:
Finally! the Italian army reaches Serbia after roughly 4 turns of support from me. Turkey was supporting the austrian unit from Bul so untill we had a border on Bul we couldnt take it.. But thanks to the capture of Smy Turkey had to use Bul and F(BLA) to cover Con. France takes Holland and that turkish A(Arm) has to move to Ank freeing up one of my units that was standing supporting Con.
I take Denmark but shuffle my units around. I moved A(Swe)-Den A(Norway)-Swe, but the german anticipated this and moved his F(SKA)-Norway...Damn that scheming lad! unfortunatly StP is not defended so it is inevitable that the German fleet takes it in the Autumn.
Italy takes Greece and has units flooding over the eastern Med. I am beginning to think i may have to take a back seat in this alliance and go a bit defensive as a border with France is opening in the north. Right screw this..I need a build. Instead of attacking the Turkish F(BLA) I figured I would go to Arm and cover Sev with A(Ukr)..Luckily for me Turkey had to disband a unit and got rid of F(BLA)..thank you very much! Italy supports me into Bul but i had previously thought i needed to take a backseat and appease the Italian so i supported him too...Doh!
06:
Well...im not gonna sit around doing nothing so i go for Bul in the spring hoping for another ITalian support...afterall, i had supported him ino Ser for 4 consecutive turns. I also move A(Sev)-Arm and F(Arm)-BLA to get two borders on Ank. Italy takes Con. Rather a happening spring turn..Lucky for me Italy has been building Fleets and has been sending them France's way. Now those french fleets gradually coming closer to my northen gains have to retreat to defend. shame!
Still not got Berlin but things are starting to look up for me.
In the Autmn i take Ank and its goodbye Turkey!! 2 builds means two more armies and im beginning to feel like a fortress in the middle with armies patrolling a lot of the land. I build A(Mos) to take back StP (as i can get support from my A(Norway)) and i build A(War) to go to Sil to get a final decisive border on Berlin.
In the South everything is neat and tidy and Italy decides to start moving his armies westwards to plug up Pie and get a border on Munich. Hurrah! it looks like the Italian is in for a long-term alliance.Things are definatly going well..i have a certain build of StP to come and Berlin after that.
07:
Well seen as the Italian has started to DMZ the south i will too. I will need his help against the French so attacking him in the south wouldnt be in my best interests at the moment.. The german has a nice method of defense by attacking my F(BAL) instead of supporting A(Ber) so i have been stalled for a little while. The French are now supporting the German when he could easily take Kiel himself. Personally i think that would have made my life more difficult in the north if he had but i guess he saw that german unit as a buffer from the Russian steamroller of armies slowly beginning to roll westwards wherever they can fit. I decicde i need A(Bud) in Boh so initially i thought of going via Vienna (moving in at spring and out in autumn). But then i realised moving to Gal and then Boh would get me there in the same amount of time without angering the Italian. Job done.
In the autum the DMZ is complete..myself and Italy only have two units defending our gains in the south and the push into France and german is on! I finally take Berlin but have to move my fleet there to be assured of it and didnt want to take chances as it was an autumn turn.So thats another 2 builds and up comes another 2 purple armies in Mos and War. Im really running out of places to put them now and dont want to attack my ally in the south. so i figure i will stack them up In scandinavia and germany. sounds good to me..just the implimentation which wasnt so easy. together with italy we have a wall of armies streaching from scandinavia down to Tunis. Its like the Iron curtain just with a hint of green on the bottom half:)
God how i need Fleets! unfortunatly ive had to occupy StP for ages to defend Norway.. The need for Fleets has only just arised and i have nowhere to build them! The phrase "grrrrr" springs to mind. So, i build more armies and now i start to feel fairly inpenetrable as Italy is tied up with France.
08:
Spring: I replace my fleet in Berlin with an Army and move the fleet out to BLA in the hope of going to SKA in the autumn. But the problem of France have 2 on Den means it has to be used to defend Den for the rest of the game.

Italy seems fairly bogged down and i start to feel some sorrow for him as i am now the biggest power by 2. therefore i support him into Munich hoping he would take the initiative and move to Burgundy to strike the French power right at its source! Well..all credit to him he tries in the autumn but France shuffles his unis about and no (important) units actually move in the autumn. I think it was this turn that (i assume) France tried to spread discontent amoung the alliance and proposed a Russian Solo as an EGP. So naturally i proposed a French solo the following turn with every intention of voting it down. I did keep voting down the Russian solo. The power was beginning to get to my head and i had put an army in Bud. Idworked out i could get 3 of the Italian centres in one move but wanted to wait untill the autumn turn of 9 to do it so i could defend them. That would put me on 15 and im sure after that i could have taken three extra to claim victory. So if this game had lasted another turn i would have stabbed my ally. Bet that makes you feel even better hey france? Oh well i will settle for 2-way draw as, embarrasingly, this is my first result on the site although i hope now my last!
When speaking to a friend about the game he said:"being on 12 as Russia you do realise its your duty to win that game??!" This started getting to me and is why i thought about stabbing Italy but it was not to be.
The reason i signed up to diplomacy was because although i feel my tactical awareness is fairly good, i am not one with words. I blamed my failure to get a result on this site in 3 games beforehand on this and so far it seems to be doing well. Im also doing fairly well in another gunboat game so i think i may be on to something there lol.
Finally again thanks to Andy for all the hard work and all the help he gave me. Secondly thanks to Italy for being a great ally and thirdly thanks to everyone else who was playing as we didnt have any anarchies! I place my result largely in the alliance with Italy and the ability to guess our moves mostly every turn.
I hope to see you all in another game soon!
Regards
Ryan Kenny (Russia)
P.S sorry if that was boring but..meh

GM (Andy Scott)

To Start with I'd like to apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to get this games EGS up. At first I was delayed by people promising EGS and then delaying them and then it simply got to the point of it being too low a priority with me having not enough time!
It would proabaly have stayed that way were it not for the dogged determination of Ryan Kenny who seems inordinately interested in was who?
As for the actual game well to me it was the typical infighting in the North and failing to spot the danger of I/R until it was too late. I'm sure certain people would argue that it is not as simple as that given that there are some very experienced players in this game but from my point of view that is the crux of what happenned. The game finally ended though on a EGP where France forgot to vote down the 2 way draw which didn't include itself!!!
Any way thanks to you all and I look forward to either playing with you or GM'ing you all again in the future.
Andy
