AUSTRIA (Alex B Jones )

My first impressions on the draw was that I have got
Austria again. I think in all the time I have been
playing on Dip2000, this is about my seventh game out
of 16 as the Austrians. Luckily I know enough about
playing them now to at least survive. This was looking
rather dodgy early on though, and I was contemplating
an early exit as I was set upon on all three sides.

Since I was hanging on to grim life, it gave Germany a
chance to mount a serious assault on Russia, and as it
appeared Germany was looking dangerously close to
grabbing a solo victory, wisely all the powers turned
against Jonathan. Once we had begun to hold him we
started to fight back and looked on course to gain
centres by the end of the game. Then came Stef's stab.
Luckily I wasn't as badly affected as Russia who was
eliminated, and I was able to divert away from the
front where the chances of a German solo had
disappeared. As I was in position to move against
Turkey he NMR'd and sunsequently went into anarchy,
probably the first time an anarchy has benefitted me
rather than someone else.

I suspected Morgan would try for Trieste so covered
that and once that had been sorted out, the remaining
year was a case of just getting orders in and grabbing
another Turkish centre.

All in all the game was enjoyable up until the last
couple of seasons where it became a case of going
through the motions. The large alliance we had going
was certainly the biggest I had been a part of and I
saw the longest meaningful convoy for a Turkish army
into Liverpool.

Congratulations to Jonathan on a well fought game and
to all those who took part as well. Pieter for hanging
on until the end, Stef for keeping us honest until his
anarchy and Morgan for co-ordinating the alliances
moves on many an occasion, even if he did try to steal
Tri off me. Good luck in the later rounds for all of
you.

Finally, thanks to Brian for adjudicating and getting
them out promptly.

GERMANY (Jonathan Langman )

"Firstly apologies for the delay in producing this; no excuses other than the usual boring stuff about work....
My strategy initially was to work with England against both France and Russia, then to move against him before I was encircled. As it happened, at the point when I made my move, I was also able to sneak into Venice and hit ten centres in autumn 1903, with units on both sides of the main stalemate lines and real prospects of a solo.
I didn't achieve it, and had to settle for first place as far as the tournament was concerned, largely because of a superbly organised and brilliantly planned stop-the-leader alliance, even though it broke up just before the cut-off point.
There's not much more to say, really: I suppose the most important point is that I would have approached the game very differently had it not been a Tourney game. My strategy was opportunistic and quite risky, although the potential gains were considerable and the time-limit made a real disaster unlikely once I'd reached double figures.
Thanks go to all the other players, and particular credit to Morgan and Alex for holding the line so well. Apologies to Bruce, who was an excellent ally and who did nothing wrong throughout the game. I was sorry that Stef wasn't allowed to continue, though Brian Frew handled a tricky situation very fairly.
And, as ever, special thanks to Brian for doing his usual superb job of GMing."

ITALY (Morgan Phillips )

Thanks for a good game. Brian was a great GM for us and Jonathan
(Germany) did especially well against the Anti-Grey coallition. (Great move
convincing Stef to mutiny!)

Jonathan - The Central Powers alliance was doing well at the start. I
think you could have ended up in even better position if you had worked
with us a bit longer before marching on Rome in 1903!

Alex (Austria-Hungary) - Thanks for working together, not having
continual Ven - Tri fights is nice (OK so we had a couple).

Stef (Turkey) - You got a unit in an English home center. You had
really nice moves for you from proxies. For someone who is not as concerned
about winning you sure jumped at the chance for the stab in 1908. Too
bad you Turks don't quite understand modern technology yet. ;-)

Pieter (Russia) - I really wish you would have jumped in with Alex and
I at the start. It would have been interesting to see how things would
have been different without the Yellow wildcard in the corner.

Erik (France) - It is OK to actually communicate what is going on
sometimes. You became almost reliably unreliable in working with the other
non-Grey powers.

Bruce (England) - I commend you for your gamble in the desperate
situtation. Sometimes you have to give the other team a shot to have a chance
to get the ball back. It didn't work this time but we had to try.

Again, thanks to all and I hope to see Burmese players at the top of
all tables in Round Two.

RUSSIA (Pieter Muller )

A very interesting game, even though I wasn't very successful.
I can't remember much from the earlier stages, other than the fact that Jonathan bloomed right from the start. I had some strange alliance going with Stef, but it seems that never really worked out for either of us. After a while the game got kinda boring, and I lost interest for a while, until I decided enough is enough, we were all fighting each other, while Jonathan was getting stronger and stronger. So that was when I mailed that "A Time for Action" mail, initializing the 6-way alliance that eventually was my undoing.
However, I can't take much credit for the Alliance other than initializing it, in the end Alex did most of the thinking.
Even though I didn't really get anywhere, I enjoyed seeing a six way alliance function, even if it was just for while. I believe that if we hadn't started working together, Jonathan would probably have solo'd a while ago.
Stef's stab was pretty good, it was too bad he had all those connection probs after that. And I'm glad he got his own private little victory, that English supply centre!
Jonathan, congrats on a good game, you played really well, and deserved your victory. Also, Alex, well done on coordinating the alliance, even if it was to your advantage, I guess you deserved it as well.
Brian, thanks for another great game.
I'll see you all on the battlefield later...

TURKEY (Stef Meihuizen )

Thanx to all for playing. Especially Pieter, who showed great
sportmansship. I have some double feelings as
apparently someone voted against me coming back, even though my NMR's
were obviously noy my fault and I
spent days trying to contact the GM, also using the message board. Oh
well, that's life and it's only a game after
all! Hope to meet you all again sometimes in better conditions where I
can take the 2nd place which should
have been mine MINE MINE! :-)
Thanx a million to Brian for GM'ing the game and putting in the effort
when my mail went berserk. As for the
game itself. I stabbed, it was good, I had PC trouble, everyone kicked
me back. I really hate this game. Oh no, I
don't. I'll be back (Austrian accent).
