This is a special report from John Simpson of the BBC, speaking by satellite link from the Eastern Alliance positions outside Kandahar. Here in the eastern part of Afghanistan, as in other areas of the country, there are two distinct groups of Taliban holding out against the other alliances. There are foreign fighters in this city, generally coming from Muslim countries, like Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, of the former Soviet Union. They will fight to the death, and have threatened to kill their local Afghani supporters if they show signs of defecting. Also trapped within this city are the local Taliban, who are mainly from the eastern part of the country. This group has recently split from other tribes in the area, and are being constantly called upon to leave the outside influences and rejoin their compatriots. They have been promised safe conduct if they do so. These conflicting pressures are causing great tension in the area. For now, it's good afternoon from me, John Simpson, outside Kandahar, eastern Afghanistan." ...and we also have the following report... The General of Russian Army Group South smiled to himself as he looked out the window of his carriage, absently he stroked the White Eagle banner which laid across his lap, once more it would hang triumphantly over the province of Rumania. The war was going well against the Austrian and Italian swine and even now as he traveled to meet with his Turkish counter part to celebrate the allied victory in Serbia he could not help but recall with a shudder his humiliating ride back to Moscow a mere 18 months ago. Fortunately the "Little Father" (God being the Big Father) as the Russian citizens referred to their beloved monarch had listened with interest to the General's report as to the dreadful defeats of autumn 1905. The General was surprised that the Tsar offered no criticism, instead the Tsar accepted the full weight of the loss of Russian lives on his own shoulders and assured the General he was free of any guilt. Within hours the German, Italian and Austrian ambassadors had been rounded up and arrested, the Tsar's judgment was swift and grim, all three were to be executed...the General had of course volunteered to perform the executions personally so that the blood of his brave fallen Russian soldiers would not go un-avenged, as the carriage rolled to a halt and the General stepped out into the cool Rumanian night air, he handed the Russian flag to an aid and then with satisfaction patted his gold plated revolver and grinned...its last use was well used indeed. The deadline for Spring 1907 will be at 6.00 PM GMT on Friday 28th December. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers!
